Luke had been young when he had gotten together with Lilith. Just fresh into law school at NYU at the time, having hopes that by time he graduated and passed the bar exam that he would have a secure future financially. All the while he had been pressured by his traditional father to marry a woman and have a kid even though he was bisexual and all his previous dating partners had been exclusively men.
It was like no matter what he did, he could never please his father. Get straight As in high school? Still not as good as Michael. Land right into law school? Never will be as successful as Michael. Luke loved his older brother but he had grown to resent him due to the constant comparisons between them.
A part of him had started rebel. As soon as he turned eighteen, Luke went right into a tattoo parlor and got his first tattoo. And after that, he went every couple months to get a new one. Boy, his father had pissed and had nearly threatened to disown him until his younger brother Gabriel had calmed him down.
As it currently stood, he had a pink pair of angel wings inked on his back. He knew that white was the standard color but he thought that pink, a “unmanly” color, would especially piss his father off. The sleeve on his left arm was an Asian inspired dragon while the right had the names of people dear to him in fancy calligraphy. The first name he had inked was Maggie, short for his mother Magdalene.
Despite his father’s complaint of being a “punk ass”, no one really saw Luke’s tattoos unless he removed his clothing because they were all in places that were easily concealed. And neither did he brag about them so most people remained unaware of his ink.
Though Lilith was far from any random hookup. She had worked part time at the nearby library as their computer expert while she was working on completing her computer sciences degree, hoping to land into an IT consultant role at a large company. Luke had frequented the library to do research for his papers because law school was essentially just a bunch of writing.
It only took one coffee shop meetup for the two of them to start dating then eleven months later their daughter Meg was born. Luke had not been planning on having a child so soon before he had even finished law school but he could not change the past. For once in his life, his father was happy and actively babysat Meg whenever they were busy.
Lilith had always been tight lipped about any of her personal problems but Luke had a hunch that something was going on with her. They spent less time together and at moments when she was supposed to pick up Meg from his father, she would not show up and disappeared for hours. She would show up later and not offer an explanation for where she had been.
It had been a Sunday morning when police showed up to his apartment door. Luke only had classes during the week so he was free on the weekends. Lilith tended to work a shift on the mornings during the weekend and was supposed to be work at the time. However, the officer informed him that Lilith had not shown up to work and her body had been found in an alley a few blocks away.
Drug overdose. Luke had no idea that it had been that bad and if only he had caught wind of it sooner, he probably could have gotten the help that she needed. Ultimately, he blamed himself for her death.
He was not sure when she had gotten involved with doing illegal drugs but Luke immediately took Meg to the doctor to make sure she was healthy because he knew of the dire consequences if she had done them while pregnant. Thankfully, the results came back clear and the doctor reasoned it all started sometime after she had given birth.
Luke and Lilith had not been married when Meg was born, it was so early into their relationship that they were not even far enough to think about having a future together, so he was fine with their daughter having her mother’s last name. Even after Lilith’s death and Luke gaining full custody, he had kept it that way in order to honor her.
Eventually Luke had grown tired of his father’s badgering that as soon as he had graduated then went through the bar exam, he moved away to the other side of the country. He was lucky to find a nice suburb town that had a law firm with an opening. Even better they allowed him to work his hours while his daughter would be in school so he did not need to hire a babysitter. Meg was only in elementary school so he thought it would be easy for her adjust to a new school and setting, as opposed to if she was older and had really established herself.
He purchased a ranch style house with an above ground pool in the back for Meg to play in. Apparently the residents of Sunnyside were friendly and family oriented because not even two hours after they had moved in, the neighbors were introducing themselves.
And after hearing that he was a single father, some of the older women were trying to set him up with their daughters. Since Lilith’s death, Luke had not dated anyone. His top priority was taking care of Meg and then he had been occupied with finishing up law school, not wanting to be a drop out and not have any means to support his daughter because that would have been utterly devastating. He had already lost Lilith, he could not stand to lose another person that he loved.
Unlike his own father would had always pressured him to act a certain way, Luke was much more relaxed with Meg. If she wanted a Thomas the Tank Engine toy over a Barbie doll then she was going to get it. Or if she wanted to play video games instead of hosting fake princess tea parties. Unlike all the nightmare stories he had heard of young children being unruly, Meg was a well behaved young girl. She never fussed if Luke told her no, though he rarely denied her anything because she was his baby girl.
It was time for parent-teacher conferences at Sunnyside Elementary so Luke would finally get to hear how Meg truly was adjusting. He had taken her to the home of some of the neighbors to play with their same aged children but she had never brought home any friends of her own so he was growing a bit worried about her socialization skills. Though Luke wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt.
The children were being kept occupied in the gymnasium while the conferences went on. A row of chairs were lined up against the wall in the hallway outside his daughter’s classroom for the parents to wait. From the looks of the couples that were gathered, it seems that Luke was the only single parent.
It was just a casual event and not one of his client meetings but even so Luke showed up in one of his suits, though he had taken off the jacket leaving just his white undershirt and a blue polka dot tie that Meg had picked out for him in the store.
As one set of parents left the classroom, a rather attractive tall man with long brown hair pulled into a ponytail popped his head out, scanning the group of remaining parents. This giant was an elementary school teacher? Damn, he should have been a basketball player instead.
“Mr. Masters?” The teacher calls out and the mistake comes as no surprise to Luke. He rises up from the chair and walks towards the classroom.
“Luke Milton but you can simply call me Luke.” He corrects politely as he is ushered inside and to a chair set up on the opposite side of the teacher’s desk.
“Ah, I apologize for that. It’s nice to meet you, my name is Sam Winchester. Before we delve into the subject of Meg, I would like to get to know a little about you. I feel like knowing the parents helps me in teaching their children.” Sam reaches out over the desk to shake his hand before Luke settles into the chair that was offered to him.
The school year had already started when Luke put Meg into Sunnyside and admittedly this was his first time meeting her teacher. He imagined that the other parents already had an established relationship with him through these conferences and other school related events.
“Ah, what exactly would you like to know? I’m afraid that I’m not that terribly interesting.” Luke leans back against the chair and folds his hands together as he crosses his legs. He was relaxed as it certainly was not an examination of witnesses and experts in court and even then it was the other way around with him asking the questions.
“I would disagree with you having such a wonderful daughter. I was thinking about your occupation for one.”
“I’m an associate at Novak and Son’s Law Firm. My speciality is criminal law.” Students were allowed to focus on whatever branch of law they wanted in school but lawyers could technically practice in any branch that they wanted. Though, it was certainly beneficial to have the knowledge and expertise to back it up.
Sam let out a small chuckle and Luke grew confused over what he had found so funny. Apparently his face spoke volumes as the teacher then replied.
“Ah, sorry, it’s just that I actually went to Stanford for law school.”
“Then how did you end up as a teacher? That is, if you don’t mind me asking.” It was not that rare for a person to end up in a field completely different than what they got a degree in or had originally plan on studying in college. In fact, it was all too common with the current state of the job market. Luke had counted his blessings for being rather successful in his ventures, though he reminded himself that he would never amount to anything as great as Michael.
“My older brother and dad ended up in a pretty bad car accident during my third year in. My father passed away and I dropped out to take care of my brother while he was recovering in the hospital. Unfortunately, law school is not the kind that you can complete online as I’m sure that you can attest to. I knew that I was never leaving my brother’s side so I went through my options until I found a teaching program that was entirely online.”
“I’m sorry to hear about your father. How is your brother?”
“Stubborn as ever.” Sam let out a small laugh and boy, was his laughter and smile beautiful. Though Luke thought it would be inappropriate to make moves on his daughter’s teacher. Or maybe wait until she had moved onto the next grade.
“Anyways, thank you for sharing what you do.” The teacher said before delving into the details of how Meg has been faring. She was a good student but found that she was quiet. He insisted that it was not a bad thing, she is still adjusting to her new surroundings and that he too had been a quiet child then came out of his shell later in life.
After their conference was over, Luke walked over to the gym to collect Meg, noting that not once had Sam tried to pry for the story about Meg’s mother. The adult supervisor was having the children play a game of volleyball with an inflatable beach ball.
“So, what do you think of Mr. Winchester? Doesn’t he remind you of a moose?” She said excitedly when she saw him.
“You know it’s not nice to make fun of other people, sweetie.” Luke scolds her halfheartedly, resisting to urge to laugh outloud as she waves her arms at him to pick her up and set her on his shoulders.
“But that’s what Fergus calls him! And he never corrects him!” Meg insists, gripping his short blond hair lightly, careful not to tug too hard.
“That’s because your teacher is a very polite man.”
“Was I good enough for us to play Mario Kart tonight?” When he was a teen, Luke used to play video games with Gabriel a lot, especially the ones that offered multiplayer even though it was sometimes fun to watch the one playing a single player game. It seemed only natural for him to do the same with his daughter.
“Only after dinner and you finish your homework.”
---
It’s a class potluck with the parents each contributing an item and hanging out with their children for the day. Luke had known well enough in advance to make arrangements with his boss in order to be scheduled off for the day. He had brought in an apple pie, which Meg had insisted on helping him make it in the kitchen.
The parents had taken the children outside to play around in the playground while Luke helps Sam set up all the food on the table. He had urged Meg to go out with the others to force her into socialization. It’s then when he sees a familiar scruffy face standing in the doorway.
Luke freezes because he certainly had not left his new address with his father or Michael. Though he would not put it past his old man to use illicit means to stalk him down.
“What are you doing here?” He scowls, burying the urge to deck his father. When he had left him behind, it was for good. He never wanted anything to do with him again. Luke stands up straight from when he had been previously leaning over the table and fixes with a glare.
“Can’t an old man see his son and granddaughter?” His father was so full of shit. He never cared, except for having his own way.
“Not when I didn’t give you permission to.” He felt Sam place a sympathetic and comforting hand on his shoulder as a show of support but his body freezes as he watches his father scrutinize it and immediately takes it the wrong way.
“Are you fucking him? I thought you were done with your gay phase when you met Lilith.” Thank God that all the children are not in the classroom and outside playing so that they don’t have to hear the vulgar word come out of his father’s mouth.
His father was referring to the fact that he had a slew of boyfriends before he had finally settled down with Lilith, believing that he had been a sinful homosexual and had then finally seen the light with her. Little did his father actually understand that he was bisexual and gender mattered little to him.
“Leave. Before I make you.” Luke bites out, trying to keep calm when all he can feel is rage bubbling underneath his skin. If he was not inside an elementary school at the moment, he would have already tackled the man to the ground.
“Show some respect! I brought you into this world!” His father shouts, raising his the volume of his voice.
“I don’t owe you a thing!” Luke yells back, young impressionable minds nearby in the neighboring classrooms be damned. This sets his father off the edge and he barrels towards them. Despite the fact that he is a few inches shorter than Sam, he places himself in front of the teacher. This was his personal problem and it would not be right for him to get caught in the middle of it.
Luke is smart and a true lawyer at heart. He waits for his father’s fist to connect with his face before he retaliates, so that it would count as self defense, giving him a punch to face in return and pins him to the floor as he struggles. It gives Sam the opportunity to call the police.
The police arrive within five minutes and the two are finally separated. The officers take both of their statements then go to Sam as a third party witness. Luke insists to the officers that he will be pressing charges against his father and maybe while he is in court he can get a restraining order against him.
His father is taken away in handcuffs and the police hand him paperwork before letting him free. Unfortunately, the altercation has dampened the mood of the potluck and all the parents are busy gossiping about what happened even though none had seen for themselves. Sam has directed him from the classroom to the nurse’s office, who is absent as she is at her lunch break, and grabs an ice pack for his face.
Though Luke is worried about the repercussions of his father’s visit. News tended to fly quickly, especially in a small community like Sunnyside, so he was afraid of being alienated by the ties that he had worked to establish. He would really hate to have to move again but he would do whatever was in Meg’s best interests.
“Did grandpa hurt you?” Meg asks as she seats herself on his lap. She’s an observant child and quick to put together the pieces.
“Yes, he wasn’t very nice.” Luke saw no sense into lying to her.
“Here, and you have some blood on your shirt so you might want to take it off and I will see if I can find you a temporary replacement. I know that sometimes the gym teacher keeps a spare or few around in his office so I will ask him.” Sam hands him the ice pack and he holds it up to his cheek. Huh, looks like he might have hit his dad pretty hard if he had drew blood. He had not even noticed.
Luke tilts his head back as he undoes his tie, handing it to Meg who plays with it, and takes off his shirt. He can see Sam do a double take as he notices the tattoos covering his body.
“Oh wow!” The teacher exclaims, his lips parted in surprise, momentarily forgetting about leaving to go to the gym. Though his tone seems appreciative rather than scandalized.
“Daddy, show him your back! Your wings are my favorite!” Meg urges him, proud of her father’s tattoos, and Luke obliges.
“That is some amazing ink work.” His face flushes with a faint red tint, probably embarrassed for looking at his exposed skin for so long.
“I told Daddy that as soon as I’m old enough, I’m getting a huge unicorn!”
“If you still want it when you turn eighteen, honey.” Meg was still so young and it was common for them to change their minds as they gotten older. He would be surprised if she would still be interested in an unicorn tattoo as an adult.
“Anyways, let me see if I can grab that shirt for you.” Sam says hastily as he makes his exit. A few minutes he returns, with a plain t-shirt in hand.
“Sorry that you had to witness what happened.” Not that it was his fault that the encounter turned violent but even still he felt bad that the teacher had to even see his father’s poor behavior.
“It’s alright, I understand. Not everyone is blessed with wonderful parents like Meg.” Luke gives a small smile as he shakes his head at Sam’s praise.
“Daddy is the best, isn’t he!?” Meg squeals in delight.
---
Thankfully there had been no fallout with his neighbors from the encounter with his father. In fact, it had garnered quite the opposite effect, all of them condemning his father and offering him their support.
It was October and Meg’s class was having a Halloween party at school where they could show up in costume, eat candy, and parents could hang around to watch the activities. Luke was not in the middle of any big cases so he was able to get away from the office for just a day so he could spend the time with his daughter. Hopefully, this time his dad, who had been released on bail shortly after the incident, would not crash the festivities.
The desks were covered in either orange or black tablecloth, handmade decorations made of paper were proudly displayed on the walls, and little gift bags filled with candy sitting on each desk. Chairs were lined up to each student’s chair so their parents could sit beside them. Meg was ecstatic to dress up as her favorite superhero, Thor, complete with a tiny fake hammer and nagged Luke until he agreed to accompany her as the trickster Loki.
His daughter was happily sipping fruit juice out of a red solo cup using a strawberry twizzler that she had bitten off the ends. Luke scrunched his nose at the sight, “Doesn’t that taste disgusting?”
“No, not really.” She shook her head, grinning. The twizzler popped out of her mouth and she stuck her very red tongue at him.
“You’re a strange one, angel.” Luke shook his head in amusement at her antics.
“And see, I told you that Mr. Winchester is a moose.” Meg pointed out as Sam re-entered the classroom, now donning a set of moose antlers.
“That accessory hardly qualifies as proof.” He snorted. A new figure walked into the classroom and Luke does a double take once he realizes it is none other than Gabriel, dressed in costume. Thankfully he had the tact to not wear a sexy costume to an elementary school and instead wore the red and white stripes associated with the Where’s Waldo character.
“Lucy~!” His younger brother sang dramatically, using the old nickname that he had given him when they were kids. Meg shot up from her desk and ran towards Gabriel with her arms wide, “Uncle Gabe!”
Gabriel picked Meg up and swung her around, causing Luke to hide his face behind the palm of his hand. Honestly, what his brother thinking barging onto the school property? Though he was grateful that he was not causing a commotion like their father had. He carried his daughter towards him and sat her down on her chair.
“I didn’t realize that you were going to visit.” Luke commented, though Gabriel’s presence was not unwelcomed.
“I heard about what happened with Dad. I wanted to make sure that you were alright.” Gabriel said sincerely. Noticing the new person in the classroom, Sam walked over to them before Luke could respond.
“My, aren’t you lucky to have two family members with you today! Hi, I’m Sam.” The elementary school teacher introduced himself to Gabriel, extending his hand out to him.
“Gabriel Milton. I’m Lucy’s little bro and Meg is my sweet little niece.” Gabriel responded, shaking his hand.
“Lucy?” Sam tilted his head in confusion over the nickname. Luke jabbed his brother in the side with an elbow.
“Short for Lucifer because that’s what Dad used to call Luke. He might be prim and proper now but he used to be quite the hellraiser.” Gabriel let out a chuckle.
“I was not.” Luke firmly denied.
“So you didn’t wrestle with Michael down the stairs? Or made that lovely hole in the living room wall?” His younger brother raised an eyebrow as he spoke smugly.
“Hey, don’t slander me in front of my daughter.” Luke protested, even though it was all the truth. His arguments with Michael almost always ended with fists flying. The aforementioned hole in the wall was created after an intense disagreement with his father and he had decided to blow off some steam by kicking the wall. Sometimes he underestimated his own strength. Gabriel had told him when they were younger that he should have put that energy towards wrestling or mixed martial arts.
“Brothers can be aggravating at times, I understand that well.” Sam smiled at them. Ah yes, the teacher had mentioned that he had an older brother before. Gabriel wanted to steal all of the children’s candy, apparently never growing out of his sweet tooth, but his daughter was kind and offered to share some of hers with her uncle. Luke was grateful that his brother had decided to visit, sometimes it got lonely with just him and Meg.
He watched with a smile as they played Super Smash Brothers when they returned to the house, about which Gabriel had commented on the lack of Halloween decorations and how that should be rectified. Gabriel was being silly and selected Jigglypuff as his character while Meg selected Sheik.
Once Meg was put to bed for the night, they gathered in the kitchen so that Luke could make some hot chocolate. Gabriel sat up on the kitchen counter while Luke stood in front of the stove, keeping an eye on the water in the pot.
“I found out from Mikey. Dad apparently called him fuming after he got arrested. Totally blamed you for everything.”
“Figures,” Luke snorted. Like he expected anything else from his father, “I bet Michael blames me as well.” All too often, his older brother would take the size of their father even if he was in the wrong, out of an extreme version of filial piety.
“You know, if the two of you actually sat down and talked, you might come to an understanding.”
“Oh, please, Michael is a stubborn old goat. Change isn’t a part of his vocabulary.” It was pure fact that Gabriel hated taking sides and tried to remain as neutral as possible but Luke knew that when it came down to it his younger brother favored him. Michael might have practically raised Luke but it was Luke that raised Gabriel and had spent the most time with him growing up.
When his older brother showed up at his doorstep three days later, Luke instantly knows that Gabriel is to blame. As Luke opened the door, Michael blinked as if he was not expecting to see him, even though it was his house.
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” he drawled out sarcastically, raising an eyebrow.
“Gabriel said that you were injured.” Michael offered in explanation.
“Gabriel! Get your manipulative rear over here!” Luke shouted. Gabriel then appeared into the hallway and walked towards the door. He stopped right beside Luke and looked at Michael.
“Hey, Mikey, what a coincidence! What brings you out this way?” He beamed innocently.
“You told me that Luke was hurt and needed assistance in looking after Meg.” Michael stated seriously. Luke was almost touched by his brother’s concern.
“Geez, do you really need an excuse to see your brother?” Gabriel teased.
“I don’t appreciate you lying to me.” Michael scolded him before letting himself inside the house.
Luke assumed that Gabriel went back to play with Meg as he was left completely alone to deal with Michael, who had taken it upon himself to inspect the decorations in his living room. If his brother noticed the lack of family photos featuring anyone besides Meg, he did not comment.
“As you can see, I’m in good health and not in need of any assistance.” Luke spread his arms out dramatically to demonstrate his point. Michael looked at him briefly before turning his attention away.
“Gabriel is right.”
“Are you feeling well? Because I swear that I just heard you say that our little brother was right.”
“I shouldn’t need an excuse to see you. I know that I have been unfair towards you.” Michael ignored his sarcasm.
“Excuse me, who are you and what have you done with my older brother?”
---
“You’re so lucky that you only have one brother,” Luke told Sam as he picked up Meg the following afternoon from school, “I don’t know how I have managed to maintain my sanity.”
“How many siblings do you have?” Sam asked in curiosity.
“Two full blooded brothers and a handful of half siblings floating around. You could say that my father got around.” Luke still remembered when he had first found out about his half sister Rafaela. She was an extremely intelligent woman and did well for herself as a doctor.
“I bet that makes for some awkward family reunions.”
“Dad stopped going after he slammed Uncle Mike into a table!” Meg interjected happily.
“Pumpkin, you’re killing me. I’m trying to make a nice impression on your teacher here.” Luke said lightly, and his daughter giggled.
“I do miss seeing Uncle Balthy though. He’s so funny!” Balthy, which was short for Balthazar, quite a mouthful Luke had to admit, was another one of his many half siblings.
“Don’t let Gabe hear that or he will be insulted that you think he is funnier than him.” Luke teased.
---
Luke is not surprised by Gabriel continuing to hang around his house but he is taken aback by the fact that Michael has not left. However, Meg was taking advantage of this and was soaking up all the attention from her uncles.
After he dropped off his daughter at school and went into the office to take care of some paperwork, Luke left his brothers to their own devices. He trusted Michael to keep Gabriel entertained because the last thing he needed was his little brother to show up at the law firm and embarrass him in front of his colleagues.
He is caught off guard when his paralegal assistant Heather tells him that he has a call from Meg’s schoolteacher. Luke lets out a deep sigh, this normally was not a good sign. He remembered the number of the times back in middle school that he was dragged by the ear to the principal’s office and his father was phoned to inform him of his bad behavior, typically get into fights with his classmates. But his daughter was a sweet girl and frankly too young to be getting into that sort of trouble.
“This is Luke.” He answered once Heather transferred the call into his office.
“Hey, it’s Sam. I’m so sorry to bother you at work but it’s urgent.” Sam’s voice was extremely apologetic and frantic, which only served to cause Luke’s heart to skip, “Your father showed up while the kids were at recess and kidnapped Meg. I’ve already contacted the police but I wanted to personally let you know.”
Luke’s heart sunk as the words registered in his mind.
“I’ll be right there.” Luke told him numbly before hanging up. He hastily told the paralegal what happened before barreling towards his car, ringing up Gabriel on the way. He drove as fast as he could towards the elementary school, not paying attention to the speed limits. He could not waste a single second. Not when it came to his daughter.
Both Gabriel and Michael met him at the entrance to the school. Cops were already on the scene, their cruisers parked in the lot. His brothers followed after him as he darted through the hallways towards Meg’s classroom, where police were interviewing Sam. It had seemed that all the other students had been either taken somewhere else inside the school or sent home. They stopped talking when the school teacher caught sight of Luke.
“I’m so sorry.” Sam instantly apologized when he walked over.
“You cannot be at fault for the actions of our father.” Michael chirped in before Luke could respond, “I will supply the local law enforcement with his current car model and license plate.” His brother commented before strolling away.
“For once, my brother is right so please don’t hold yourself responsible. Meg absolutely adores you and would hate to see you frown.”
“Dad’s not a local so unless he plans on taking her back home which would be super obvious, he’s probably not far.” Gabriel reasoned. Despite how much of a goofball his younger brother was, he knew when to be completely serious.
They decided that their best bet would be to split up so that they could cover more ground. They exchanged cellphone numbers so that they could get in contact with each other if they found a lead. The big question was, where would his father take Meg?
Luke drove out to the community playground, filled with children and their parents but his daughter was nowhere in sight. But no matter what, he had to hold onto hope.
He got a call two hours later from Sam to meet him at an old abandoned church. In the parking lot overridden by weeds, Luke saw his father’s car parked. Not seeing Sam outside, Luke headed inside the church. In front of the altar, he saw the school teacher on his knees hugging Meg and an unfamiliar man beside him staring down at the lifeless body of his father. As he ran closer, he was able to make out a gun in the man’s head.
Luke just could not find it in him to feel sorry for the fate of his father. He reaped what he had sowed and he had lost any ounce of respect that Luke had left for him when he kidnapped his daughter.
“Daddy!” Meg cried out in joy and relief, letting go of Sam and running towards him. Hearing her voice was like music to his ears. He swung her around in his arms and held onto her tightly.
“Baby, I’m so happy that you’re okay.” Luke spoke, barely holding back tears. Sam stood up straight and talked in hushed tones to his companion.
Once Luke was finally able to let go of Meg, albeit reluctantly, he walked towards Sam to give him a heartfelt thanks. There was not enough words to convey how grateful he was. His body reacting before his could catch up, Luke planted a big kiss on Sam’s lips. He froze as soon as he realized what he had done and promptly apologized.
“It’s alright, you’re not the first guy to kiss me.” Sam responded humorously then points out the man beside him, “Anyways, this is my brother Dean.”
