At first, when they were dragged down into the cage, Lucifer and Michael had done nothing but get into each other’s faces and shout, blaming the other for their predicament. Eventually, after Death had come down and scooped the remnants of Sam’s soul out, the two archangels stopped arguing so much and calmed down to the point that it was near silence in the cage.

Well, almost silence, save for a few choice comments from Adam about how the cage sucked and how he wanted to be back in heaven with his mother. They were not anywhere near reconciliation but it was a step.

Lucifer did not mind the silence so much, he had been completely alone in his previous confinement inside the cage, and tuned himself towards his thoughts for entertainment since he no longer had Sam to bother.

However, he was brought out of his musing as he felt tingling from his upper arm, where his Mark was, until it ceased a few moments later. Lucifer had assumed the form of Nick in the cage and he swiftly shrugged the blue jacket off to pull up the sleeve of the weathered green t-shirt on his left arm.

Not even the heat radiating from Michael could quell the chill that ran down Lucifer’s form as he noticed that the Mark was gone.

No, what had those idiotic Winchesters unleashed now?

Scratch that, he knew exactly what they had let out. The Darkness. The very entity that Lucifer and his brothers had fought side by side to defeat and sealed away with the Mark serving as its lock.

He had felt it when Cain had passed the Mark onto Dean and initially found it humorous. The Righteous Man, true vessel of his brother, tainted and corrupted. Although, Michael had not appreciated the irony as much as him.

But what in his father’s name were they thinking? Did they not grasp the concept that some things exist for a reason, no matter how horrendous it might seem?

Stupid hairless apes.

Lucifer let out a low growl, which drew the other archangel’s attention. Before he knew it, Michael was next to him, inspecting the spot on his arm where the Mark should be. He was too irritated to laugh as he saw his brother’s eyes widen in shock, realization setting in at the implications of its disappearance.

This was rich. The devil was condemned as the incarnate of pure evil but little did the humans know that he did not hold a candle to the Darkness. He, at least, had a reason for his actions but this entity needed none to let his father’s best creation burn.

Bitter laughter escaped his throat as Michael shouted from the cage, cursing and warning about the Darkness. It was pointless, not even their true voice could reach anywhere outside of hell. Lucifer knew it well after the countless times he had called out to his father. His onetime communication with Azazel had been a rare exception and even then he had to yell out with all his might just to be heard as whispers.

Fools, Lucifer shrieked out anyways while paying no mind to Adam in the corner plugging his fingers into his ears and giving both archangels a fierce death glare.

Little did the human know what was in store.
