If someone told Sam Winchester years ago that he was going to share a countryside home with Lucifer and adopt countless animals, mostly feline in nature, then he would have laughed in their face. Well, after recommending that they visit a mental hospital and get their head checked because why on earth was someone fantasizing about him with the Devil.
But no, here they were. Not as a prank or elaborate joke, this was their reality.
Sam had quickly discovered that despite Lucifer’s disgust of humanity, he had a soft spot for animals. It first became apparent when Lucifer had tagged along with Sam on a hunt that ended up through the woods and after the shifter had been ganked, the archangel had stopped when he found a fawn that had its one leg stuck in a bear trap. Sam could only watch with interest as Lucifer had knelt down and gently removed the deer’s leg. The animal had nuzzled his head in thanks before taking off into the bushes.
Sam had thought about getting a pet. He had been really happy when he had his dog and thought the animal company would be enjoyable for Lucifer. His only reluctance was with his occupation as a hunter and the angel joining him most of the time, it would consist of the pet spending too much time on their own inside the house.
Though all those considerations went out the window when he had sat at a park bench with Lucifer, enjoying the scenery of ducks swimming in the pond, and a white cat jumped onto the angel’s lap. It had been a surprise but Lucifer had eagerly rubbed the feline behind the ears and heard him speak out some strange incoherent noises that did not sound like any language he had heard of. When Sam had finally asked Lucifer what was going on, he had replied that he was speaking with the cat.
The answer had shocked Sam. When Castiel had mentioned one time interrogating the cat, he didn’t think he had been truly serious. It just seemed too weird to be true but apparently he had underestimated angels in this respect.
Lucifer had gotten upset when he found out that this cat was a stray and did not want to let it wander the streets any longer so he brought him, as the angel proudly informed him of the cat’s sex, home with them. Sam had no complaints. Whatever made Lucifer happy, made him happy, he supposed.
There was many pet owners that refused to have their animal share the bed, let alone the bedroom, but Sam was not one of those people. As Lucifer spooned him while he slept, which it was a little awkward considering the height difference but the angel insisted on being the big spoon, the cat settled itself between their legs, enjoying the warmth between their bodies.
It was all dandy until the next morning and discovered as he rose up that there was a bundle of pink fuzz by his legs. To say that he was confused was an understatement. He had called out for Lucifer who had vacated the bed before he woke up and saw as two fluffy pink ears perk up at the noise.
“What did you do to the cat!?” Sam said, horrified.
“Just a tiny pinch of magic. I asked Pink for permission beforehand and thought it would be nice if his coat matched the color of my wings.” The Devil shrugged at him before bending to pick up the cat into his arms, cradling him like a baby.
Several thoughts had ran through Sam’s head at once. He knew they had yet to decide on a name for the cat but Lucifer had went ahead to call him Pink, which he found to be rather lazy. And secondly, he had pink wings?
“Why?” Was all Sam could utter as he remained dumbfounded.
“Sammy dear, please stop looking at me as if I defiled a church. And does the Devil really need a reason to do anything?” He planted a chaste kiss on his forehead with a smile.
It had not ended there. And it was not just one or two more cats. More like seven more. And Lucifer had made them all sorts of different colors from the rainbow and named them respectively after their color. He still did not like the choice of names but he had eventually relented.
Sam was half wondering if the angel was going to turn into one of those old cat ladies that people joked about. He had put his foot down on Lucifer adopting any more cats because he thought seven was more than enough for them to handle. It’s not like they were operating a cat orphanage.
All the cats were rather well mannered, although Red had a grumpy disposition that made him wonder if she was the feline version of Lucifer. Sam could have sworn that Red narrowed her eyes at him whenever he withheld treats as if she was secretly plotting his demise. While the other cats would situate themselves peacefully at their feet while they slept, every morning Sam would wake up to Red practically sitting on his head.
Red was the iconic color that humans associated with the Devil, right?
Even in the moments that Dean had swung by the house to visit and make sure that Lucifer was treating him alright, his older brother had called Red “hellspawn” as she had taken to raking her claws down the back of his legs. But it was only Dean, she did not bother any other humans and Sam idly wondered if Lucifer had put her up to it.
It was finally winter and the two of them were wearing matching sweaters as they perused the pet store for presents for their cat “children”. Of course, they had all give their own suggestions to Lucifer. Namely a few new stuffed mice, though Red wanted a live one to torment, and treats.
Sam had stopped by the window where the store kept their puppies up for adoption. He remembered the golden retriever that he had named Bones fondly. He had been disappointed to leave him behind when he had to finally rejoin his family. Their cats were nice but he sorely missed having a dog.
“I thought you swore me to no more animals.” Lucifer teased into his ear as he wrapped an arm around his waist.
“I had only specified cats, not any other type.” Sam pointed out thoughtfully. He knew better to be unspecific with the angel or he would twist his words to his favor.
“Well then, why don’t you pick one out?” He placed a kiss on his ear before Sam turned to look at him in surprise.
“Are you serious?”
“Mmm, very. Let’s say this is my Christmas present to you.” Lucifer wasn’t too keen on the holidays but went along with the tradition anyways, typically ignoring all the religious context behind it.
“Alright, but I’m naming this one.” Sam insisted and the angel offered no complaint on the subject. He had taken his time browsing through all his options and eventually settled upon a male yellow lab. He was the biggest of the litter and had let his siblings eat before allow the other puppies do so.
Sam had eventually decided upon the name Chester by the time they left the store with dog supplies, such as a pink collar that Lucifer had insisted upon, and presents for the cats on hand. He was slightly worried at how the cats were going to handle the new arrival into the family.
Thankfully, it had not gone too bad, all things considering. They had surrounded the poor lab on all sides, more out of interest rather than malice, and even Red had pounced on his back but with some guidance from Lucifer they had settled down.
The cats largely stayed indoors but thankfully from living in a countryside home, they had plenty of room for Chester to run around in, which was especially good for an energetic lab.
The cats continued to sleep in their usual places while Chester decided to curl up against Sam’s chest and proceeded to wake him up the following morning by licking his face, which for him was preferable over Red sitting on his head. He could feel Lucifer laugh lightly as his lips moved against the back of his shoulder and blew out air.
This wasn’t the life Sam had ever expected as hunters couldn’t really have a normal life but he did not wish it any other way. He was more than content with this family he had created with Lucifer.
