When they had first ran their intervention with Kelly Kline about the fact that she was carrying the Devil’s child, Sam had discreetly slipped her his contact information just in case she needed help or someone to talk to. Four years had passed by without any word from and being unable to track her whereabouts. By then, Sam had largely gave up his life of hunting, only occasionally assisting when Dean needed it, and settled into a normal life. He had went back into law school and finished his degree, focusing on criminal law.

Sam had just wrapped up a case with a defendant who had robbed a gas station when he had gotten a call during his lunch break. He answered automatically, “Sam Winchester, District Attorney”.

“Sam…” He heard a feminine sounding voice that seemed to be distantly familiar, “I don’t know if you remember me but this is Kelly Kline. We met four years ago when...I became pregnant.”

It had been so long but Sam’s memory was good. He had always wondered what happened to her and the child, figuring the lack of contact meant she was fine or that angels had found and killed her. “Oh...yeah, I remember.”

“Is it possible for us to meet? I would feel better about talking about this in person.”

“Umm, sure.”

And so Sam had found himself standing in front of a normal looking San Francisco house, nothing seemed to be obviously out of place. He tentatively knocked on the door and was taken aback when a small girl opened the door, peering up at him in curiosity. She had wavy brown hair that was pulled up into pigtails and icy blue eyes that were reminiscent of Lucifer. There was no doubt about it, this was the nephilim child, Lucifer’s daughter.

“Sweetie, what did I tell you about opening the front door to strangers?” He heard Kelly’s voice come from behind her. The girl tilted her head at him. The door was opened wider as Kelly came up and rested her hands on her daughter’s shoulders. She look relieved to see him.

“Oh, I’m glad that you could make it here, Sam. Please come in.” Kelly lead him into the living room and he took a seat on the couch. Rather than sitting with her mother, the girl sat beside him.

“What’s your name?” Sam asked the girl softly.

“Lily!” She smiled up at him.

“How are you doing?” He turned to face Kelly.

“Alright. I moved around a lot but I finally got tired of being on the run. The reason why I called you is because Lily’s powers have started to manifest...and I don’t know how to handle it.”

“Wow, she’s still so young…” Sam commented. Though Castiel had said with an archangel as her father that she would be much more powerful than a regular nephilim, “What kind of things is she doing?”

“She has levitated objects around and has disappeared on me to reappear somewhere else.” He did not think that nephilim had wings to render them capable of flying but Lily was special.

Sam turned to the girl and asked, “Do you have wings?”

“Mmhmm! Do you want to see?” Just before Sam could protest as he knew seeing parts of the true form of an angel could blind a human, a pair of tiny fluffy white wings emerged from her back. Kelly looked absolutely stunned.

“They’re very pretty but you should be careful and not show your wings to just anybody.” Sam cautioned her.

“Why not?” She tilted her head at him, and that head tilt had to be an angel thing.

“Most humans don’t know that angels are real and would freak out if they saw your wings.” He explained carefully.

He had not expected to return to Boston with a young child that was also part angel but he could not blame Kelly for being overwhelmed as a mother. She was just a normal person and was unequipped to deal with the supernatural like Sam was. He asked Kelly if she was sure before they processed the papers for the adoption. Even though Lily was now in his custody, he had no intentions of hiding her away from her mother and planned to keep her updated on her growth.

Sam had always wanted a normal, apple pie eating life but he had never expected that he would end up with a kid before a partner. Sam had discrete one night flings since Jess’ death but he had not dated anyone seriously since then. Before it had been because hunting was not conducive to having a stable relationship but he was unsure of what was stopping him now.

Sam grew paranoid, knowing that a fair number of the angels would want nothing more to kill Lily because she was a nephilim and Lucifer’s child so he put up Enochian sigils warding his apartment from angels and kept an angel blade on hand.

He had taken Lily to the nearby park to socialize with other children about her age as while she was a nephilim, she deserved a chance at a normal life, well as close to normal as they could get. From what Sam had gathered, Kelly had divulged to Lily that her father was an angel but she did not reveal anything more than that. He wanted to tell her the truth as only hiding it would probably only hurt her later down the line but he did not know how to break it that, “yeah, you’re father is the Devil”.

Sam could not place a finger on what but something was bothering him, as if he was being watched. He had glanced around the park but did not see anything out of place. He was just worried that an angel was going to appear out of nowhere and attack. He swore that he would be ready if that did happen, angel blade concealed up his sleeve.

He cursed when he noticed that Lily had approached a random woman with long curly blond hair and had her arms reaching out towards her, asking to be picked up. Sam darted over to them to scold her for talking to strangers.

“Lily, honey, what are you doing?”

“It’s daddy!” She beamed at him and Sam just froze in shock. Could Lily recognize the grace of her father? No, this woman could not be Lucifer. They had sent him back down into the Cage, he should not be freely walking the earth. The woman who was presumed to be the Devil scooped Lily up.

“You are a remarkable young girl. But you should really listen to your papa before you give him a heart attack.” Lucifer booped her in the nose. He, or is it she since the vessel was female, turned to face him, “Hello, Sammy.”

“Luc-” He started to say his name but was immediately cut off by the archangel.

“Just Lucy is fine.”

“Mommy said that you were locked up. I didn’t think I would ever get to see you.” Lily rested her head on Lucifer’s chest and looked up at him in adoration.

“Nothing in the whole world could ever stop me from seeing my little precious sunshine.”

Sam could hardly separate Lily from her father so unfortunately Lucifer followed them back to his apartment. He let out a big sigh, how did he get himself into these kind of messes.

“Lily, how about you go to your room for a bit while I talk to your father?” He phrased his order as a request and Lily obliged without complaint, though giving a small pout as she walked by. Sam kept an eye on her as she walked towards her room, waiting until she closed the door behind her before turning to face Lucifer.

“How did you get out?” Sam demanded in a hushed whisper, watching the archangel as his eyes scanned over his decorations and picture frames.

“You assume that I had been sent to the Cage after you kicked me out of my vessel.” Lucifer responded vaguely, rubbing at a speck of dust with his thumb.

“What?” Sam gasped in shock at the implication that Lucifer had been free this entire time.

“I have been freely walking the earth for the past four years.” He confirmed.

“Doing what?” He was surprised that there had not been any more suspicious deaths of prominent figures, such as when Lucifer had jumped from Vince Vicente until he had made his way into the President. Though perhaps he had kept a low profile on purpose to avoid detection by them.

“What else? Looking for my daughter, of course. Though, I had not expected to find her under your care.” Lucifer looked directly at him, blue eyes staring right into him. Sam averted his gaze, feeling uneasy under his scrutiny.

“I’m not letting you take her.” Sam let the angel blade slip out of his sleeve and held it in front of him. He knew that the blade could not kill him but it could still do some damage against the archangel.

“I don’t know whether to be flattered that you have grown so protective of my daughter…” Lucifer cackled before narrowing his eyes and hissed out, “but don’t you forget for a minute that it is my grace that runs through her veins. She is mine.”

“Lily isn’t some toy! And I’m not going to let you use her.” Sam growled out before lunging at Lucifer, the angel blade was easily knocked out of his hand so he resorted to his fists.

Their struggle caused quite a noise as furniture was knocked over. Lucifer had him pinned to the ground and landed a few hits to his face. Right before he went in for another, Lily had appeared, distraught as she sobbed at the sight before her.

“Lily-” Sam started to speak up to explain the situation but was cut off as Lily shrieked.

“Papa, Daddy, please don’t fight each other!” Sam groaned as his ears rang painfully at the sound. He felt Lucifer rise off his body and walked over to Lily, picking her up.

“Shh, it’s okay.” He tried to soothe her but she struggled in his hold.

“You hurt Papa!” She protested angrily, frowning at him. Lily resisted until she broke free from Lucifer and walked over to Sam, kneeling beside him. Lucifer let out a loud sigh in irritation. Lily pressed her hands against his face and he could feel the soothing sensation of healing magic wash over him, “There! You are all better now.”

As she smiled at him, Sam reached up to touch his own face in confirmation. His jaw dropped as she had indeed healed his injuries. Satisfied that he was okay, Lily turned on her heel to glare at Lucifer as she demanded, “Now apologize to Papa.”

“You’re blaming me for this? Your beloved Papa was the one that attacked first.” Lucifer huffed. It was the truth but Lily did not seem to buying it one bit.

“Doesn’t matter.” Or perhaps she did not care even if Lucifer was telling the truth.

“Are you seriously picking that overgrown moose over me?”

Lucifer was too prideful to oblige Lily’s demand and honestly Sam did not want his apologies, especially when he knew that he would not mean it. The only thing that he ever regretted was not getting his own way. Lily eventually calmed down to the point where Sam was able to put her to bed, insisting that Sam sat next to her until she fell asleep. He carefully slipped out of her hold to check on Lucifer in the living room. In his absence, the archangel had taken to perusing through his belongings as if he owned the place.

A scowl crossed his face as Lucifer peered up from one of his old photo albums that he had been looking through. Sam grabbed it out of his hands and placed it back onto the bookshelf, “So what, are you expecting to live with me now?”

“If you insist on retaining custody of my daughter then yes.” Lucifer answered firmly and Sam let out a low growl of frustration. Chuck be damned, he might have signed up for raising a nephilim but her archangel father was not a part of the package. And Lucifer was relentless so he knew that if he turned him away that he would not stop until he caved in.

“Fine but if you insist in staying under my roof, you listen to my rules. If you don’t like it, I don’t give a shit.” He snapped, jabbing his finger into his collarbone to emphasize his point.

“Geez, Sammy, lighten up, will ya?”

“Lighten up? You’re the Devil. You wore me to the prom to try to rid the world of all humanity, you then tortured me in the Cage when things didn’t go your way, and you have repeatedly tried to kill my brother and I. Not to mention you impregnated some poor woman.” Sam pointed out.

“That’s not fair, Kelly came onto me. What was I supposed to do, turn her down and ruin my cover?”

“You’re ridiculous, do you ever take responsibility for your own actions?” Lucifer narrowed his eyes at the insult.

“Why should I when you humans are always so quick to blame your sins on me? The Devil made me do it! It’s a load of bullshit. All I ever did was give Eve a suggestion, she followed through in taking a bite of that apple on her own accord.”

“That’s no excuse.” Sam replied harshly.

Sam had went into the office the next day extremely stressed out. Originally Sam was going to bring Lily with him into work until he could arrange for a babysitter but Lucifer had insisted on watching over his daughter. Sam permitted it, after giving Lucifer some strong words of what would happened if he disappeared with Lily or otherwise caused some trouble.

“Geez, Sam, have a rough one last night? I thought the whole point of vacation was to relax.” His paralegal assistant, Liz, greeted him.

“Yeah...it turned out to not be much of a vacation.” Sam chuckled weakly as he scratched the back of his head.

When Sam returned home, he found Lucifer painting unfamiliar looking Enochian sigils on the wall while Lily bounced happily on the couch watching television.

“What are you doing?” He inquired while Lily ran over to hug him. Sam picked her up and held her on his hip.

“You have some decent protections up but I can add some better ones.” Lucifer replied, sparing a quick glance at him.

“Daddy started teaching me Enochian! It’s the language of the angels!” Lily happily informed him.

“You’re teaching her Enochian already?” Sam asked in surprise. He had heard of starting to teach kids while they were young but she was still only four. A remarkable four year old but still. Sam had hoped to give her a normal human life.

“We were taught while we were very young. It started with Enochian as soon as we were created. History lessons and combat training came as soon as we mastered the language then finally we learned how to use our wings.”

“Do you think that I will be able to fly?”

“Sure, once your wings get big enough to support you.” Lucifer answered simply with a shrug.

“Is it normal for nephilim to have wings?” Sam wondered out loud.

“No, not really...though all of the other nephilim that had ever existed had not been the child of an archangel so the expectations cannot be the same.”

“You don’t think that Gabriel ever…?” Lucifer seemed to tense at the mention of his brother, which was no surprise since he had been responsible for killing him, but he quickly shook his head.

“No, he would be too terrified to break a taboo like that so I imagine that he made precautions to ensure that none of his partners conceived.”

Sam was determined, in spite of the not so normal circumstances, to give Lily a normal childhood which meant taking her to do normal child things like trips to the zoo or the museum. She was probably a little too young to fully appreciate an amusement park. So, on his day off, he had taken her to the art museum with the hope of possibly teaching her some culture and history as well.

“What a pretty lady!” Lily, who had been holding onto his hand, had commented at the painting of Joan of Arc. She was depicted with brilliant red hair and wearing a suit of armor.

“She was a French hero during the Hundred Years’ War but she was unfortunately burned at the stake for crossdressing.” Sam explained.

“And Michael had been a bit smitten with her.” Lucifer snickered from behind him.

“Wait, so her visions really were visits from angels? I thought the angels did not get involved with the Earth…before...you know.” Sam questioning, deliberately avoiding of bringing up the subject of the Apocalypse directly.

“There were some notable exceptions.” Lucifer replied nonchalantly.

“Did you get to meet her?” Lily asked, eyes sparkling with interest.

“No, sweetie. You see, I was locked up for a very, very long time.”

“Why were you locked up? Did you do something bad?” Sam laughed at her innocently posed question. Little did she know. He wanted to tell her the truth but he was still not sure how to frame in a good way or a way that would not freak her out.

Lucifer rose his eyebrow at Sam, noting his amusement, before hunching down so that he was at the same eye level as his daughter to answer her, “I was very bad and did a lot of awful things. But I don’t regret it one bit because if I had not done what I did then I would never have you.”

Lily let got of his hand to hug Lucifer and he scooped her up into his arms, starting to carry her around the museum. Sam was ready to walk straight past one of the replica paintings of the iconic image of St Michael casting out Lucifer but it had grabbed Lily’s interest so Lucifer had paused to allow her to look.

“Who’s that?”

“Your uncle Michael, well as the humans imagined him.” He answered humorously.

“And who’s the other person?” To Lucifer’s credit, it did not show on his face whether her question made him uncomfortable.

“It’s supposed to be me.” Sam was surprised that he had answered truthfully.

“Why is uncle Michael stepping on your head?”

“That is a good question, those painters were rather obsessed with the notion. But it is supposed to represent when I fell and subsequently kicked out. See, God had given Michael the order to cast me out of heaven.” Lucifer explained and Lily frowned.

“Do you ever miss home?”

“I never really missed heaven itself but I did miss some of my siblings. The ones that I had been particularly close to.” While Lucifer did not give any names, Sam had a pretty good idea of who he referred to. Michael and Gabriel. Both were rather complicated.

Lily had been tuckered out by the end of their trip so she ended up being carried on Sam’s back and quickly fell asleep, snoring quietly into his shoulder.

“I had not expected you to be so honest with her.” Sam took advantage of the fact that Lily was not awake to address Lucifer softly as he opened the door to his place.

“What sense is there in lying? Sooner or later she would find out the truth.” Lucifer watched over him as he carefully maneuvered Lily onto her bed and tucked her in.

Later Sam finds Lucifer standing inside the bathroom, staring at the mirror and poking at the flesh of his vessel. He paused in his step, confused by the sight.

“What are you doing?” As Lucifer turned around to answer, Sam can see a small sore starting to form on his cheek.

“It’s tough finding a decent vessel. I haven’t even used much of my power and already this one is starting to decay.” Lucifer frowned.

“I’m not going to say yes.” Sam reminded him.

“Did I ask you to?” He snapped in irritation.

“What am I to think? You tried to jump my bones several times before.” He pointed out.

“I’m pretty certain that Lily would hate me if I took your body. She has grown rather attached to you.”

“Can’t you find someone as strong as Nick? He held up pretty well considering.”

“Nick was special, a diamond in the rough. His body was resilient but even still I had to consume lots of demon blood to keep him together. Unlike the rest of my siblings, only my true vessel can house me permanently.”

“What about asking Chuck for a vessel?”

“Like the old man gives a shit. He sprouted all this nonsense about how sorry he was then what is the next thing he does, take off with Auntie Amara! He doesn’t care, he only apologized because he knew that he needed my help.” Lucifer hissed out.

Sam is unable to offer any alternative. He wondered if this was going to become their routine, Lucifer constantly cycling through vessels. It did not seem like a good idea for the long run, not to mention the human lives lost in the process.

The next time Sam goes into the office, he placed a call to Rowena. He waited until he went into work so Lucifer was not around to overhear him. If there was anyone that could possibly figure out a solution, it would be the witch and the Book of the Damned.

“Well now, I have not heard from you in a long time. Thought perhaps that you were lying six feet under.”

“Ha, ha, you know that I’m not that easy to get rid of. I have retired from hunting.”

“Not completely if you are calling me.”

“It’s not like that...I want to ask you for a favor.”
