Dean is expecting their plan to go off without a hitch: Sam would say yes to Lucifer, Dean would perform the Enochian incantation with the Horseman rings to open the hole to the Cage, and Sam would dive down. He did not like it any bit that his brother was going to play martyr in order to trap the Devil but there was little option elsewise, save for Dean giving himself over to Michael which was not going to happen in a million years.

However, it went so wrong. Sam said yes and Dean performed the incantation perfectly but Sam had been unable to wrestle control away from Lucifer, though for a minute he is cruel and plays along pretending to be Sam. Except for the part where he says something else in Enochian and the hole closes then takes back the rings.

“I told you, this would always happen in Detroit.” Dean thinks back to the conversation he had with Lucifer in the future that Zachariah sent him to and how Lucifer had laid the inevitable in Carthage.

“Oh yeah, and since when did a rebel like you give a damn about destiny? I thought you were more of a free will kind of guy. Screw Daddy’s plans and do things your own way.” He shoots back, not buying for a second that this was how things were going to end. Sure, their plan backfired but he was going to find a way. He always did.

“I don’t. You humans always misunderstand me. I don’t want to fight Michael but I know that he is never going to agree to stand down with me so I have no choice but to defend myself.” His voice is remorseful.

“That’s bullshit and you know it.”

“You don’t know my brother like I do...I like you, Dean, I really do, which is why I am conceding to Sam’s wish to leave you alone. You better scurry off...I cannot promise your safety if you decide to interfere with the battle.” Lucifer says as if he already knows for certain that Dean is going to completely disregard his warning and try to follow after him anyways.

He’s not going to lie, driving up to Stull cemetery to get in the middle of two pissed off archangels about to duke it out was nerve wracking. Some might even say that it was downright foolish or claim that he has some sort of death wish but Dean is not going to let go of his baby brother so easily.

“Sammy.” Dean cries out even though he know it is Lucifer wearing his meatsuit and Sam is nowhere near the driver’s seat. Lucifer’s eyes flicker over to him, momentarily ignoring Michael who is riding Adam’s flesh. Dean blinks as for a second, he mistakenly thinks that the Devil’s harsh gaze had softened ever so slightly when looking at him, as if filled with affection. But that certainly cannot be right.

“You don’t belong here, Dean. By refusing me, you’re no longer part of the story.” Michael says harshly.

“Don’t be rude, brother.” Lucifer admonishes the other archangel with a casual wave of a hand before Dean even has the chance to reply and the Devil’s lips curve into a fiendish smile.

“And since when have you cared so much about humans? Certainly not when you defied our Father’s will.” Michael asks skeptically. His tone is bitter, sounding as if he had been personally offended by Lucifer’s rebellion.

“At least he cares about his younger brother and is not so hasty to cast him aside.” Lucifer sneers. It might sound like a compliment praising Dean but he knows that it is intended as an insult to Michael by comparing him to a lowly human and that he was no better.

“You’re a monster. You have left me no choice but to kill you.” Michael hisses and Dean almost feels sorry for the Devil. Almost . He ain’t forgiving him anytime soon for wearing his brother.

“No one makes us do anything.” His gaze wavers away from Dean to focus back on Michael. Dean could have sworn that he looks sad as he speaks out the line, as if there was a hidden meaning behind those words beyond what he had said to him earlier, like there was something that he was missing.

Dean is rendered speechless when Lucifer moves forward to embrace Michael in a hug. It seems so strange and out of place until Dean notices him that he has tossed the Horseman rings onto the grass in a spot right behind Michael. He takes advantage of the opportunity and utters the incantation while Lucifer is holding Michael in place. As soon as the archangel hears Dean start to speak the Enochian words, he immediately starts to struggle but with Lucifer inside his true vessel, he does not have the raw power to break free.

“I’m sorry, brother.” Lucifer practically whispers and as he lets go, he pushes his brother backwards towards the hole in the earth.

“No, this isn’t how it’s supposed to end!” Michael lets out a furious roar, his arms flailing out in attempt to grab a hold of something but it is too late as he falls down. Lucifer is staring straight down at him, tears pooling freely, and remains still even as the hole closes up.

Normally Dean would not care about Lucifer’s so called feelings but it did not seem right to ask if he was ready to let Sam go immediately after he had just doomed Michael to be trapped in the Cage. Another brother that he had lost by his own hand.

“Perhaps you and Gabriel were right. It still does not make it any easier.” Lucifer finally breaks the awkward silence and speaks vaguely. He heaves out a deep sigh.

“So, what now?” Dean eyed the Devil warily. He just wanted his brother back and stop Lucifer before he can resume any plans to exterminate humanity. Lucifer tilts his head and steps towards Dean.

A cold hand tenderly cups his face almost lovingly and before he knows it Lucifer has dipped down to kiss him fully on the lips. He is too stunned to respond, which allows Lucifer to take what he wants, sneaking his tongue in between his lips. Dean is overcome by the feelings of how wrong this is. Not just the fact that the Devil is kissing him like a lover would but that he is still wearing his brother. He loved Sam, just not in that kind of way.

Mortified, thinking how in hell was he going to explain this to Sam when he gets him back but maybe he won’t have to if he ends up lucky for once and Sam has been unconscious during the whole thing, he pushes back against Lucifer, successfully dislodging their lips.

“I don’t know about you angels but humans don’t make out with their siblings. It’s sketchy.” Dean settles for commenting on the wrongness of the kiss than dwelling over why Lucifer had even done it. Why were angels so weird and confusing?

“Ah, yes.” Lucifer responds simply in disinterest over the matter of incest like it was unimportant. Maybe not to him but it was to Dean.

“In any case, I will be returning Sam to you shortly as soon as I find myself a new vessel.” The Devil changes the topic away from their kiss, avoiding explaining himself to him. Dean would still like to know why but he is too relieved to hear that he will be getting his brother back to insist on the matter.

A week later, Sam shows up, Lucifer free. It’s awkward at first as Dean learns that Lucifer had kept Sam conscious the entire time he was possessed, which means that he had front room seats to the kiss. They both end up laughing it off but Dean can tell that Sam is holding back, perhaps withdrawing some insight that he had.

There is no word on where the the Devil went after leaving Sam but Dean swore that he was not hallucinating about the white feather tinted with flecks of icy blue hues that he had found in his motel bed one morning.
