It was not that Gabriel had anything against the concept of love but it was just easier to have flings without any strings attached to them. Some of them he eventually came to have affection for, like Kali, but he would not dare to call it love. He had said as much when Lady Frigg asked one time, in front of a crowd of fellow pagans, if he had any interest in marriage and he responded that it was unlikely for him to ever settle down with anyone.
Most likely she was longing for grandkids but Gabriel was careful to the point of paranoia about not impregnating any of the women he slept with because of the taboo of nephilim. He could disguise himself as a pagan all he wanted but he could not change the fact that underneath it all he was still an archangel.
Low and behold, one day Dean Winchester walked in and crashed his little bubble out in Springfield, Ohio masquerading as a janitor and dishing out just desserts. Not just any human either but Michael’s true vessel, which should have told him to stay away. He really should have stayed away.
But he could not find the will to do so. Dean shared a love for sex and cheesy soap operas. And even though there was nothing good to come out of the brothers sacrificing themselves for each other, he respected Dean for always being there for his brother. He may have had a crap childhood but family still meant a lot to him. Gabriel missed that his own broken family could take a cue from the human.
He managed to seduce Dean into his bed for a fun roll in the hay and told him that he would fake his death in order to fool his brother and his mentor, who set on stabbing him with wooden stakes, which he deliberately refused to admit that the stakes could not harm him. Dean had agreed and Gabriel thought that was going to be the last time he would see him.
But when did ever Gabriel have self control? He could not resist the urge to meddle with the Winchesters when he had gotten word of the deal that Dean had made to save his brother. What he also knew that once Dean was sent to hell, after hellhounds collected him to fulfill the end of the deal, it would lead to the very first seal being broken and set the Apocalypse in motion. As much as he loved his brothers and felt bad for Lucifer being locked up in the Cage for so long, at the same time he did not want to watch them kill each other. It was the reason why he left the Host because he could not stand the fighting.
He had hoped to throw a wrench into destiny but all his efforts were for naught. Dean still went to Hell, the first seal was still broken, and Lucifer was set free onto the Earth. He was surprised when the Winchesters had sought him out instead of the other way around but they were desperate for any kind of help to end the Apocalypse.
He had been enjoying a re-run of Dr Sexy in just a tank top and boxers when they stormed through the door of his current residence, followed by his little brother. He ended up dropping the cheetos that he was about to shove into his mouth.
“You were right…” Sam commented at Dean before staring down at Gabriel, wooden stake firmly in hand, “How the hell are you alive?”
“I’m more resilient than a cockroach. And really guys? Barging into my place bearing arms? Why can’t we all just be friends?” Gabriel tsked, pushing himself up from the recliner and snapped his fingers to make their stakes disappear.
“Maybe because you killed me over and over again at Mystery Spot?” Dean replied, scowling at him. It looked like that he had not forgiven him for that. He had not done it out of pleasure, okay maybe he had a little bit of fun crafting creative ways for him to die, but there was a point to his actions, he was trying to teach a serious lesson to Sam. Not that it ended up doing any good.
“And so what, you want to get your revenge because the whole world goes bye bye in a nuclear archangel blast?”
“You know about what is going on?” Sam asked in disbelief. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed that Castiel was squinting at him with a peculiar look on his face. Gabriel had done a good job of masking himself but perhaps his brother was able to see through his cloak of pagan magic and get a glimpse of his grace.
“Who doesn’t? Sam starring as Lucifer and Dean starring as Michael. It’s the celebrity death match of the millennium.”
“We’re not saying yes.” Sam insisted.
“Sam. Dean. The trickster isn’t who we think he is.” Gabriel saw just as the realization dawned on Castiel’s face and he warned the brothers, both of them turning to him in confusion.
“Say what?” Dean asked, shooting a glance at Castiel before settling back on Gabriel.
“He’s-” Castiel started to reveal his identity but Gabriel instantly cut him off.
“Nuh-uh, I don’t think so,” Gabriel admonished before snapping his fingers again to send Castiel far away.
“What the fuck did you do to Cas!?” Dean demanded, dropping the stake and harshly gripping the collar of his shirt trying to intimidate him.
“Oh, he will be fine...maybe.” He shrugged casually. Gabriel grinned at Dean before snapping Sam away, leaving the two of them alone.
“Hey!” Dean shouted as soon as he realized that his brother was missing.
“Why don’t you and I work off some of that tension? You know, one last romp before the world ends?” Gabriel leered.
“Are you serious right now? No! Bring my brother and Cas back right now!”
“...Fine.” He let out a disappointed sigh and snapped his fingers to bring back the two. Castiel gave him a fierce glare and Dean let go of his collar so soon as his brother and friend was returned to him.
“Gabriel. You were presumed to be dead.”
“You know this asshole?” Dean asked, not connecting the dots just yet but Sam was quicker to the punch.
“You mean the archangel?”
“Well, as you can see rumors of my death have been highly exaggerated. Putting in a few rumors here and there worked like a charm.”
“You could stop them. End this whole Apocalypse.” Sam suggested.
“Me get in the middle of those two? Are you crazy? The whole reason why I left the Host was because I couldn’t stand their fighting. Worse than a married couple.” Gabriel shook his head fervently. The metaphor was not too far off, considering that his brothers had been mates but the subject of mates was not something they shared easily. Especially not to humans. It was considered to be a sacred bond and engaging in a mating bond was not to be done lightly.
“And so you’re just going to stand by the sidelines and do nothing?”
“Hey, I’m not the one who popped Lucifer out of the box.” Gabriel retorted. Sam gave him a kicked puppy look and Dean just looked angry. Probably pissed off to find that not only he was angel but that he refused to help as well.

Gabriel had said that he was not getting involved and he tried to rationalize that he was not interfering directly when he showed up at the Elysian hotel, cursing at the fact that the Winchesters had gotten suckered into a trap laid out by his pagan friends. He had not wanted the pagans to get involved either. Lady Frigg had told him about the discontent but he had not thought that they would attempt to do something about it.
He should have known better than to underestimate his friends. He crafted an illusion to barge into the ballroom and then snapped the brothers into their hotel room.
“And when are you ever lucky?” Gabriel spoke up, interrupting the conversation between the Winchesters.
“Well you know what, bite me, Gabriel.”
“Maybe later, big boy.” He gave a suggestive wink and Dean just rolled his eyes.
“Why are you even here? I thought you didn’t want to get involved.” Sam pointed out.
“That certainly hasn’t changed but those guys are either going to kill you or use you as bait for my brothers.”
“And why do you care?” Dean grunted. Maybe because he had more than just unsavory feelings towards the elder Winchester but like hell he was going to admit that. He should have stayed clear of him because he knew it would never end well since he was Michael’s true vessel.
“I don’t.” He lied out of his ass.
---
Gabriel sought out Kali to sweet talk her and sneakily nab the vials of blood so that the brothers could escape since so long as she had their blood they were unable to leave. Unfortunately, she had seen right through him. Now, he was just as stuck as the Winchesters were.
“You care for that human.” Kali leveled at him and Gabriel wondered when she had become so insightful.
“What human?” He laughed off her statement in the hopes that she would let the topic go.
“Michael’s vessel.” She clarified.
“You gotta be kidding...falling for one of my brother’s true vessel is nothing more than bad news.”
“Don’t lie to me, Gabriel.” Kali hissed out.
“Well...when I said I’d never fall in love, I think Aphrodite took it as a challenge.” He admitted honestly, remembering that the Greek goddess was one of the those present when he had loudly proclaimed to Lady Frigg that he planned on remaining single for life, before begging, “Kali, please don’t do this.”
“I have to."

When Lucifer storms into the ballroom, Gabriel cursed at his Father. This already bad situation had gotten worse. He had not seen his older brother since he had fell. Under different circumstance, perhaps it would be a welcome sight.
He had thought to hide it out until everything blew over but things had progressed to a point where he could not ignore anymore. Gabriel created a DVD, disguised as a porno, that gave instructions how to send Lucifer back into the Cage then handed it off to Dean for safekeeping before confronting his brother.
“Lucy, I'm home.” He announced dramatically, taking the attention off from Kali before Lucifer could turn her into finger paint like her fellow fallen comrades, “C’mon guys, this is your cue.” He barked out, hoping that they would get the hint and get the hell out of Dodge.
They scrambled up from their positions and took Kali along with them. Gabriel gave one last lingering look at Dean before he exited through the door.
As Lucifer turned his own blade against him and he felt his own grace start to fade away, Gabriel thought of Dean and hoped that he would be able to endure through this mess, despite all the cards stacked against him.
Maybe he could be proven wrong...and show him that destiny could be averted.
