Gabriel had told Luke once that he liked listening to himself talk too much. He would like to disagree with his younger brother on that statement but perhaps that is why he had found himself being in charge of the morning announcements at his high school right at the start of homeroom. He worked from a desk right outside the principal’s office with his back to a wall of glass.

Occasionally he would notice some of his fellow students hanging around and watching him give the announcements out of interest, only rarely returning. But lately, he started noticing a routine guest every morning. Dean Winchester, a junior, and more importantly,  a jock on the football team.

Luke, on the other hand, was a senior, looking forward to graduating and heading out to college, and quite frankly a nerd. Let not his well concealed tattoos speak otherwise. Dean had not said a word to him and would quietly walk away when he was done with his announcements but this time he had lingered around then approached him.

“Hey, you want to bail this joint and grab some coffee?” The invitation was unexpected and Luke had to quickly compose himself before he dropped the textbooks that he was holding. Why on earth had Dean Winchester taken an interest in him?

“Look, I don’t want you to miss class so maybe some other time…” Luke said hurriedly before darting off towards the direction of his first class.

Though, he was completely wrong to think that he could escape Dean for long. After all, his twin brother Michael was also on the football team.

“Boy, do I love Taco Tuesday,” Gabriel proclaimed as he sat down next to him at lunch with his school bought lunch. Luke always packed his own meals and he had brought in a vegetable sandwich and an apple, not caring much for the taste of meat.

“Please, what don’t you like?” Luke rolled his eyes as he responded sarcastically. Before Gabriel could reply, Michael sat down across from him at the table. Luke raised an eyebrow at his twin since he never sat with them. They might have been born on the same day, Michael being a few minutes before Luke, but they could not be more different.

“Has Saint Michael grown tired of his motley crew?”

“Dean told me that you turned him down.” Of course he did.

“Are you seriously suggesting that I should have skipped school? Some role model you are.” Luke scoffed.

“Wait, you mean that Dean Winchester - one of the most popular guys in school and has all the girls and a fair number of boys drooling over him? He asked you out on a date?” Gabriel interrupted.

“Just coffee.” Luke said simply with a shrug.

“Bro, you can’t be this dense.” Gabriel shook his head in disbelief.

Unlike the rest of his classes, the sections for gym were not decided based by grade so there was a mixture of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Luke’s class. Typically he stuck by his fellow senior and friend Meg but Dean was also in his gym class. He might be a nerd with no interest in sports but Luke did have an athletic build just like Michael. When he was younger, his father had tried to get him to play soccer but his stubbornness had eventually caused him to give up.

Today their objective was to run laps around the track and Meg was stretching out next to him, “Is it just me or is Dean Winchester staring at you? What did you do? Take a piss in his pudding?”

“I’m not so juvenile to do such a thing….He asked to take me out for coffee this morning and I turned him down.”

“You what…!? Are you crazy!?”

“Dear Lord, you are starting to sound like Gabe,” Luke huffed as he leaned forward to tighten his shoelaces.

“Seriously, what’s the holdup? You can’t lie to me and pretended you’re not gay. Isn’t he your type?” Luke groaned. Why had he trusted her and divulged his sexuality to her again? The whistle blew and he ignored her question to start running the track, though she had no trouble catching up to him.

By time that gym was finished, Luke was covered in sweat when he returned to the locker room and was looking forward to a nice hot shower.

“I’m not sure what my brother told you but I’m not more amicable when standing naked in the shower.” Luke told Dean when he stood next to him, feeling his gaze lingering over his tattoos.

“How about after school?” Dean suggested. Well, seemed like he was not deterred easily.

“Don’t you have practice? I bet that would make your coach real happy.” It was not like Luke thought that he was unattractive, far from it. Meg had been right in saying that Dean was his type. The problem was that he just did not think that he was good enough for Dean.

“Coach can deal with it. Are you game or not?”

“I have to babysit my little cousin.” Luke felt bad for making up a bullshit excuse and Dean did not seem so convinced either but he did not press the matter further.

---

Thursdays were the days that Luke grabbed the box from the main lobby where students could anonymously ask questions that he would answer during the announcements. There was always a few inappropriate ones that he quickly discarded. The box was surprisingly fuller than usual, an oddity since not a lot of his peers submitted question, and Luke started to wonder if it was part of a prank.

As he started to peruse through the small scraps of paper, Luke started to notice that they were all compliments directed towards him like, “you have a nice voice”.

“Thank you to whoever filled the question box with such wonderful comments but I would appreciate it if you didn’t remove the actual questions to do so,” Luke addressed the matter over the microphone.

When he later told Meg, she was stuck on the notion that Dean was behind it, “I think it’s really sweet and you should give him a chance.”

---

He got a text from Meg to meet her at the Coffee Bunker after school. Luke did not think much of it as they did hang out outside of school but when he showed up at the shop, he was dismayed to not find her but he did notice Dean sitting on a stool scrolling through his cell phone. He looked up and seemed surprised to see Luke.

“Luke…? Michael texted me saying that he was going to meet me here. It’s not like him to be late…” Indeed, Michael was very punctual, never late for anything. This was indeed suspicious.

“I hate to break it to you but I doubt that he will be showing up at all. Apparently my now ex-best friend was in cahoots with my brother to orchestrate this.” Luke motioned at the two of them.  Oh, they would pay for meddling in his affairs. They were probably across the street keeping an eye on them.

“Oh…” Dean pursed his lips and why did he have to have such kissable looking lips? “Want to grab a coffee while you’re here?”

Just a cup of coffee, Luke told himself.
