[Fic] "Job With Benefits"

Dean hated just about everything in regards to being an omega and wished that even if he could not be an alpha like his younger brother that he could have been a beta. He hated the heats that left him weak for several days and unable to do anything productive. He hated society’s perception of omegas and how the laws tended to favor alphas. But most of all, he hated how every single alpha thought they were entitled to him because he was an omega and that he was somehow in the wrong for refusing them.
He was the only omega to be working as a mechanic for Gavin’s Auto. Dean used scent blockers to mask his scent to pass as a beta, even though all of his coworkers knew the truth, the purpose was to minimize the harassment from pushy customers. When he was not busy working on other people’s cars, Dean would work on his pet project, restoring a black ‘67 Impala. It was certainly time consuming, he had gutted it to the bare bones and was now building it back up.
The hood was propped up and Dean was hunched over the engine. He was too focused on checking out the engine to pay much attention to what was going on around him and what his coworkers were up to. That is until he felt a hand make contact with the curve of his ass, a playful smack. Snarling at the unwanted contact, Dean pushes himself up from the hood to stare down the culprit.
“I wouldn’t mind having a go at that firm ass if you are ever in need during your next heat.” Jason, another mechanic at Gavin’s and a stereotypical alpha, smirked at him.
“Fuck off. And don’t you dare touch me again.” Just because he was an omega, it didn’t mean that any alpha had a right to treat him like he was some plaything for them to do with what they will. His body belonged to no one but himself.
“Oh, and what can you do about it? All you omega bitches live for is to be fucked good and hard by an alpha’s knot.” He sneered cruelly.
“Jason, stop it, that’s too far.” Henry, a beta and another coworker, spoke up and Dean could see that he was growing uncomfortable by the conflict.
“No, this omega needs to know his place.” Jason grabs him harshly by the back of his head and shoves him down against the Impala. Dean was not going to let him rough him up like this so he fought back. He shoved his knee up hard, hitting Jason right in the crotch, causing him to rear back and let go as he let out a howl of pain.
“Oh, you bitch, you are going to pay for this!” Jason growled and brought up his fists. If there was one thing that his father had imparted on him before he passed away was how to defend himself. He had trained him just as hard as his younger brother, going as far to have them spar with each other so that Dean knew how to handle fighting an alpha.
Dean dodged a punch and used his quick agility to knock Jason over before he could try to throw another. He used all of his anger to lay it all into his face. It was not long before someone pulled Dean up and off Jason. Dean grinned in pride as he saw all the bruises on the alpha’s face.
He was dragged into Gavin’s office, who sat at his desk with a very grim expression on his face.
“Dean, you’re a good worker but we don’t need these kind of fights in the shop. I’m afraid that I have no choice but to terminate you.” What the everloving fuck? Jason started the whole thing by sexually harassing him and he was the one getting fired?
“What and you’re just going to let Jason walk without so much a slap on the wrist!?” Dean raises his voice, annoyed at how the alpha was getting preferential treatment. Damn their society which favored alphas. He had thought Gavin was better than this but apparently he had been wrong.
“It won’t look good to the public if I fire him.” Omegas were the bottom of the rung, not permitted to occupy positions of power or authority. They were supposed to be submissive to their alpha counterparts but Dean had never buyed into the nonsense. Alphas were not held accountable for their actions like omegas were and here was another demonstration how messed up their society was.
“Fuck you, you coward.” Dean spat and stormed out of the office. He tossed all of his belongings into the trunk of his baby and drove out of the garage. On the way back to the flat that he shared with his younger brother, he stopped at a pizza shop to pick up some pizza and beer, a tried and true method for putting him into a better mood.
Sam worked as an IT consultant for Invisi-tech, a big corporate name business. Their president, Michael Novak, was frequently in the news for their latest innovations. His shift was standard office hours so it would be a few before he would come home so Dean decided to relax until then as he deposited his car keys into a bowl by the front door. He grabbed a slice of plain cheese as he put the pizza box down on the kitchen counter, instantly shoving it into his mouth.
He tossed his jacket onto the nearby chair and jumped onto the couch, reaching for the remote to turn on the television and skip through the channels until he found a program of interest. Dean let out a growl as he saw a cheesy omega soap opera. God, those shows were the worst. It was always about an omega saving themselves until they found their perfect mate. Apparently, it was supposed to be a romantic ideal but it just made Dean want to gag.
Unlike many omegas, Dean was no blushing virgin. However, he only slept with betas, male or female did not matter to him, because he could not stand most alphas. His brother was one of the few that were not a complete ass.
“Hey.” Sam said as he shuffled inside, wearing another one of his expensive suits, his standard attire for work. He shrugged off his suit jacket and pulled down his tie. He paused as he stared down at him on the couch and squinted his eyes, instantly noticing the several cans of beer lying on the end table and that Dean had not enthusiastically greeted him like he normally did.
“Are you okay? Did something happen?” He voiced in concern and walked around to the other side of the couch, blocking Dean’s view of the television.
“I don’t know what you mean, ‘ammy.” Dean slurred out.
“You’re drunk which tells me that you did not just get home from work.” Damn for his brother for always being the book loving smarty pants. It was extremely difficult to successfully lie to him because he figured things out way too quickly.
“Maybe I took a sick day.” He replies. Sam gives him a skeptical look but covers his bases by feeling his forehead before calling bullshit.
“Do you want to tell me what this is really about?” His brother says calmly as he moves his legs so he can sit on the couch.
“I got fired, man. All because that knothead Jason couldn’t resist touching my ass.” Dean answered and as he reaches for another can of beer, he is cut off by his brother batting his hand away.
“Fuck, I’m sorry.” He offered in sympathy.
“Though I laid it into that douche real good, dad would be proud.” Dean snorts as he recalls all the bruises on Jason’s face, all courtesy of him.
“I bet he would.” Sam shakes his head as he lets a small smile show on his face.
Dean had been hoping to sleep in the next morning because he did not currently have a job to report to but his younger brother woke him up anyways. He almost tossed his pillow at him for not letting him sleep. He tried to ignore his brother by burying his head further into his pillow but Sam was persistent.
“I am going to try to talk to my boss and see if we can get you an interview at Invisi-tech. They are known for being rather progressive in terms of their treatment towards omegas so I think you wouldn’t run into any issues there.” He offered kindly.
“And do what? All I got is a GED to my name, not some fancy college degree like you do.” Dean sighed and rolled himself onto his back to look up at his brother. As soon as he had presented as an omega, his high school life became hell. He could not handle all the jeering and harassment from his alpha classmates so as soon as he turned sixteen, he dropped out.
Since both of his parents were dead by that point, there was no one to complain about his decision, except for Uncle Bobby but he had been understanding and accepted Dean’s reasons for quitting. Though he told him to not totally give up on his education and pushed him towards getting his GED.
“We’ll figure something out.” Sam assured him.
Once Dean woke up properly three hours later, he decided to handle some basic chores while he had the time and cleaned the flat from head to toe while he had some hard rock music blasting from the stereo. After the cleaning was well and done, he ran over to the grocery store to pick up ingredients to make dinner.
“Smells good.” Sam complimented when he got home and took in the smell of what Dean was making in the kitchen. Dean had always preferred home cooked meals over frozen or take out but it had been difficult when both of them were working.
“Anyways, I have you set up for an interview tomorrow at eight thirty in the morning.” Sam informed him as he used the keurig to brew him a cup of tea. He had not doubted that his brother was going to try to find a job for him but he had no expected something so fast.
“Damn, Sam, you weren’t kidding! Who did you have to sleep with to hook me up?” Dean chuckled and saw as his younger brother shuffled around awkwardly.
“No one...it’s just the Luke overhead me and arranged for it on my behalf.” His face started to turn red, which made Dean instantly suspicious. Was this Luke an omega that had taken a liking to his brother?
“And who’s Luke?” Dean grinned at his brother.
“Luke Novak. He’s the Vice President of Invisi-tech.” Sam answered and Dean nearly dropped the spatula he was holding in the saucepan with the baby carrots he was sauteed with butter. Of course, he had heard of that name before, he was the president’s younger brother, yet another alpha. He had no idea that his brother was on such good terms with the vice president.
“How do you know the VP? Let alone have him wrapped around your finger?” Dean carefully picks the spatula out of the hot pan, mindful to not burn his fingers.
“It’s nothing like that, Dean. “ Sam shakes his head.
“C’mon a guy like that won’t do a favor of that kind just for anybody.” Okay, so Luke wasn’t an omega head over heels for his brother but it was still highly unusual. His younger brother blushes a little more. Perhaps he was not completely off base with his assumption. It was not completely unheard of for an alpha to mate with another alpha but it was extremely rare.
“Wow, Sammy, way to go. I’m surprised you hadn’t mentioned anything sooner.” Dean smiled, bumping their shoulders together.
“I...we...it’s not like that. At least, not yet anyways.”
“What’s the holdup? You know that I don’t care who you want to date.” Dean had not seen his brother date anybody since Jessica’s untimely death.
Sam had always been quite popular and had a slew of girlfriends and the occasional boyfriend in high school but when he went to Stanford for law school, that was when he met Jessica. She was a sweet and feisty beta but unfortunately their beautiful relationship was taken from Sam when she was hit by a drunk driver one night. His younger brother could not take it to stay in the law school program anymore, too consumed by his grief and every example of drunk driving cases in his courses reminding him of her death at every turn, so he switched his major and focused on computer programming instead.
“It’s not that. More having to do with the fact that he’s technically my boss and we’re both alphas. It would cause a scandal if we went officially public.” Sam sighs. He supposed that he could not be too hard on his brother for keeping his new relationship on the downlow.
“So, what’s the job like?” Dean might as well know what he was getting himself into before he went for the interview.
“Customer service under Luke’s division.”
“Yeah?” From the sounds of it, the job did not sound too bad. He could do customer service, so long as people were not complete assholes.
“Save for Luke, it’s only comprised of betas and omegas so you shouldn’t have any issues with alphas there. Besides that, they have really strict sexual harassment policies that make alphas accountable for their behavior in the workplace.” Sam explains. He was not kidding when he said that Invisi-tech was progressive.
“So is your boyfriend going to interview me then?” He teases.
“I don’t think so…though I cannot be sure who will. A lot of the hiring tends to be delegated to the personal assistants but sometimes Michael or Luke like to be hands on if they have time.” Sam takes a sip of his tea.
“You know...I just realized, I don’t have any suits to wear.” Dean commented, turning off the heat to the stove as the baby carrots were finished. He sets the pan on the burner in the back before leaning down to remove the meatloaf pan from the oven with gloves. He never had any need for such formal clothing as he was just a mechanic and you never wanted to take the risk of wearing anything nice as it could easily get dirty.
“And mine would be too big on you...Hold on.” Sam walked out of the kitchen and towards the living room as he pulled out his cellphone. While his brother was busy, Dean focused on setting up the dinner plates. By time he was finished, Sam had rejoined him in the kitchen.
“Luke is going to stop by in an hour with a suit that you can wear. You’re close to him in size.”
“Well, not everyone can be a giant.” Even in terms of being an alpha, Sam was huge. The physiology of an alpha made them generally bigger and bulkier than their omega counterparts but Sam fell well outside the standard range.
The doorbell rung sometime after seven and Dean shot up off the couch so he could get to the door before Sam so he could get a good look at his brother’s “boyfriend” and prospective boss. Luke only seemed to be a few inches taller with him. He had dirty blond hair and piercing icy blue eyes, which stuck out even underneath his glasses. Draped over his left arm was a bag containing what Dean presumed to be the suit he would be borrowing. Though, rather than showing up wearing a suit, Luke’s attire was much more low key, just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
“Dean, I presume?” Luke said coolly and politely extended his free hand towards him. Dean accepts the handshake.
“Yes sir.” It would not be wise to piss off his potential boss so Dean decided to be on his best behavior and be as respectful as possible. Luke let out a low laugh.
“You don’t need to stand on such ceremony with me outside of the office, especially when I’m at your residence.” Dean nodded and opened the door wider so Luke could walk through.
“Sam.” Luke acknowledged his brother, who was standing off to the side, with a tilt of his head.
“Where would you like me to set this?”
“Ah, I can take it.” Dean takes the suit off of Luke’s hands and carries it into his bedroom, hanging it over the door to his closet so it would not get wrinkles in it. Afterwards, he shuffles back towards the living room to rejoin Luke and Sam.
“Thank you, it means a lot for me to lend me your suit and give me a chance at a job.” It had not escaped his notice how closely together the two of them were standing.
“Don’t thank me just yet. You are going to have to make quite an impression on my brother as he decided that he will be taking point for this interview.” Luke’s arms are crossed in front of his chest. Dean gulped nervously.
“Doesn’t he have better and more important things to be doing?” Surely being president of Invisi-tech was a busy job and there was no shortage of work to be done.
“I have learned not to argue with my brother, he’s insanely stubborn.”
“I’m starting to think that’s a thing about older brothers because Dean is the same way.” Sam chuckles.
Luke does not linger for too much longer as he says that he has some work that he wanted to wrap up at home before he turns in for the night. He gives Sam a chaste kiss on his cheek before he leaves and Dean just grinned at his brother.
“Oh shut up.” Sam said as soon as he saw his face.
“I haven’t said anything.” Dean said innocently with a playful tone.
“You were so going to.”
The brothers decided to save gas and drive into Invisi-tech headquarters together. The suit that Luke had selected for him is an olive green with a black tie and even though the alpha is a few inches taller than him, the suit fits him nicely. The sleeves are not too long nor are the pant legs.
Sam assists him with getting a visitor’s badge and directing him towards the right floor for his interview before he goes off on his way. He is guided towards the desk of Michael’s personal assistant, Castiel, to check in. The alpha peers up at him as he approaches.
“Hi, my name Dean Winchester and I’m here for an interview at eight thirty.” He said politely. Granted, he was about forty minutes early because Sam had to be in earlier to start his shift. The assistant shuffles through some papers, seeking to verify the information that he was given.
“Yes, thank you, I will let the president know that you are here. Please have a seat.” They were on the thirty first floor, which was the highest floor in the building, and from his seat by the windows Dean had a good view of the city. Castiel had slipped away from his desk and squeezed himself through the nearby set of double doors.
A few moments later, he had appeared back and informed him that the president was ready for him. Dean was extremely nervous about the interview as so much rode on it. He was not sure if he would have much else options if this opportunity fell through. Sam had drilled him with potential interview questions late into the night to prepare him.
The alpha was wearing a lavender suit as he stood looking out through his office window. He had messy dark hair, in contrast to his brother. As Dean walked closer, he stood awkwardly, not sure how to proceed, but thankfully Michael turned around to face him with bright blue eyes that were more vibrant than Luke’s.
“Dean, is it? Nice to meet you.” Michael extended his hand out over his desk.
“Thank you, Mr. Novak.” Dean says sincerely as he accepts the handshake.
”Please, sit, and we can get onto business. I contacted you previous place of employment and your former boss explained to me the circumstances behind your termination.” Michael also takes a seat as he starts off their conversation, folding his hands in front of him. Dean instantly became worried about what sort of things that Gavin had said about him.
“I’m sorry for how you were treated there. Please be assured that Invisi-tech takes such matters very seriously and we have policies in place to handle such circumstances in a professional manner should they arise. Alphas are not given any special preference over omegas.” Dean is struck by how apologetic Michael is. He lets out a sigh of a relief that the alpha is not putting all the blame on him for the confrontation.
The interview flies by quicker than he expected and before he knows it Michael is thanking him for his time and leads him out of his office. He sees Luke waiting outside and as soon as Castiel tells him to take a seat, the vice president walks into the president’s office. He can only assume it is to talk about whether he is hired for the job or not.
Luke is smiling when he emerges from the president’s office, which he hopes is a good sign, and he calls Dean by his name. With a wave of a hand, he gestures him over and back inside.
“You know, I almost mistook Dean for you when he first walked in because the suit he’s wearing absolutely reeks of you even if it is clean.” Michael is raising an eyebrow at Luke.
“What can I say? I leave quite an impression, even on inanimate objects.” Luke smirks at his brother.
“Obviously my little brother is biased so I cannot ask for his objective opinion but I think you have proven yourself worthy of being given a chance at our company. You will be placed into the sector under his supervision. Luke can provide you with the details of what that entails.” Michael turns to address Dean.
Luke has a smug look on his face as he wraps his arm around Dean’s shoulder and leads him out of the office telling him that he is going to give him the grand tour. Turns out that he was not kidding either. He shows most of the building, not limiting himself to just the office that Dean was going to work out of.
“I am going to have you shadow Alfie and he can show you the ropes.” Alfie, the man in question, was a beta that looked like a much younger version of Luke. When Dean voices his observation, it causes the vice president to laugh.
“Not too surprising since we’re cousins. Castiel, his personal assistant, is another one of our cousins. I suppose you can say that we like to keep it in the family.” Luke explains.
Once Dean is left into Alfie’s care, which he finds out is just a nickname and his real name is Samandriel, Luke wanders off to do whatever. Handling customers over the phone is easy enough, it’s just a matter of having the right information to provide them with the answers that they wanted.
When it is finally time for his lunch break, Dean texts Sam to meet up with him inside the cafeteria on the tenth floor, that is unless he did not have plans to have lunch with Luke. When Sam does show up, he is not alone and is accompanied by a two other people. A short redhead and an Asian dude.
“This is Charlie and Kevin. And this is my brother Dean.” Sam introduces them to each other. Charlie waves at him enthusiastically while Kevin is much more mellow. Dean had not brought along a lunch because he was not sure if he was going to get the job so he purchased a meal from the cafeteria before sitting down with his brother and his friends.
“So, how is it going so far?” Sam asks as he digs into his salad.
“Not too bad. I’m shadowing Alfie at the moment and he’s showing me the ropes of what to expect.” Dean comments.
When Dean gets back to Alfie’s desk after getting to know Sam’s friends during lunch, he finds a short man with light brown hair draped over the back of his coworker’s chair. As he turns toward Dean, he can see that his eyes are like honey.
“You’re new.” The man purrs as he eyes Dean. Despite the fact that this man was very short, Dean could tell that he was in fact an alpha.
“Gabe, behave, or else Luke will be pissed if he hears that you are harassing his employees.” An omega woman with long curly brown hair walks by and whacks him in the back of the head with a rolled up piece of paper. Dean’s jaw almost dropped at how unexpected the action one, especially coming from an omega. She was no pushover. Though, judging from her words, it sounded like she was familiar with this alpha.
“You’re no fun.” The alpha whined.
“If you want fun then go bother Balthazar.” She said firmly.
“Gabriel, what do you think you are doing?” Luke’s voice interrupted before he can reply. His boss was staring at them with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
“Luci! I was looking for you!” Gabriel beamed and pulled Luke into a sudden hug.
“You know where my office is.” Luke rolled his eyes and dragged the shorter alpha away before he could cause an even bigger commotion.
“Who was that?” Dean blinked in disbelief of what he just had witnessed. It was such a bizarre encounter. Was this a common occurrence in the office?
“Gabriel Novak. Luke’s and Michael’s younger brother.” The woman answered.
“Does he work here?”
“Thank God, no. He would drive his brothers nuts all day. Though, he runs the candy store that is located on the ground floor. I’m Meg, by the way, Luke’s personal assistant.”
“Dean.” He introduced himself.
Before Dean went down to meet up with Sam, he walked towards Luke’s office to tell him that he would clean his suit as soon as possible and return it. As soon as he opened the door, he was struck by an overwhelming smell of an omega in heat. Luke was hunched over his desk and he looked feverish.
No way...Luke was an omega? He had been lying about being an alpha this entire time? Dean supposed it was not too hard with the right amount of scent blockers and heat suppressors, which the Novaks would be able to have access to readily with their wealth. But something had went wrong for Luke to be in his current state.
Dean’s thoughts were scattered all over the place and he froze when Luke looked up at him, giving a deer caught in the headlights look at being discovered in this state. The door behind him bursts open and it is Michael whose hair is a complete mess. He sucks in a deep breath when he catches sight of Dean but he pays him little mind as he rushed over to his brother’s side.
“C’mon, let’s get you out of here, Lu.” Michael says in a hushed tone and pulls up Luke so he is leaning on him for support. Dean is disregarded as the president leads his vice president out of the office. He is too shocked to move but before he knows it, he is knocked out by a hit to the back of his head.
As Dean finally starts to regain consciousness, he hears the voice of Michael’s personal assistant speaking, “Was it really necessary for you to be so rough?”
He was lying on his belly on some sort of surface and he felt an icepack being gently pressed against his head.
“He’s a big boy, he can handle it.” Came the reply from Meg.
“Ow, where am I? And what about my brother?” Dean asks as he opens his eyes and takes a look at his surroundings, which were completely unfamiliar to him. He was laid out on the couch in the living room of someone’s residence. Though, it was not just any residence as the decorations and furniture screamed expensive to him.
Castiel is seated on a chair that is pressed right up against the couch so there was no doubt which one of the two was holding the icepack. Meg was relaxed comfortably on a recliner a few feet away.
“Your brother believes that you were asked to stay late for additional training.” Meg answers, scrolling through the contents of a cellphone. Not just any phone. His phone!
“So, what are you going to do to me?” There was no doubt in his mind that he was here because he had inadvertently discovered the truth about Luke. If that information were to go public, it would absolutely destroy Luke’s career. With omegas not being allowed to hold positions of authority, Luke would have to be demoted from being vice president and a huge scandal would erupt over his deception.
Dean was a risk.
“We could just kill you and dump your body in the river…” Meg suggested casually with a shrug.
“Meg!” Castiel hissed at her, seemingly offended by her idea.
When Michael showed up inside the living room, both of the personal assistants cleared out so that they were left alone. Dean was no longer lying on the couch and was standing up. He did not even bother with using the ice pack as he did not feel that bad.
“I apologize for the rough treatment but it needs to be assured that you will not leak what you have learned to anybody. How much to ensure your silence?” The alpha pulled out a pen and a checkbook out of his suit pocket.
“You can keep your money. I get it, okay? I know how much it sucks to be an omega. You don’t know how much I would give just to be a beta. That’s fine if Luke wants to keep his status a secret from the public but he shouldn’t lie to my brother. Sam deserves to know the truth especially if their relationship is going to progress further.” Trust was an issue that Sam had with one of his past girlfriends, Ruby. She had tried to lie and manipulate him so Sam would not appreciate to find out that Luke was lying about himself, even if his reasons were understandable. It was better to admit it sooner than later.
“Noted but I will leave that to Luke’s discretion.” Michael nods, shoving the checkbook back into his pocket. He seems taken aback that Dean did not have any demands to keep Luke’s secret. Sure, the money would have been nice to live more comfortably but Dean prided himself in having some self respect.
“Alright, is that all?” He said impatiently. All Dean wanted right now as to go home, grab something to eat, and go to sleep.
Michael offered to give him a ride home after handing his cellphone back over to him but Dean was stubborn and insisted that he would find his own way. As he stumbled out of the Novak mansion and not entirely sure what part of town he is in, Dean immediately regrets his prideful nature.
“Need a lift?” A light blue car pulls up and the passenger side window rolls down revealing Meg. Castiel is seated over in the driver’s seat. He opens the back passenger door and takes a seat behind Meg. Once he settles, Castiel asks for his address before driving off.
“So, what are you, some kind of ninja?” Dean asks Meg, referring to how she had crept up on him and knocked him out like a pro.
“Only when my job calls for it.” Meg grinned.
“How are you liking your job so far?” Castiel asked politely.
“Fine, except for when I’m being abducted for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.” Dean said in humor.
“My apologies but unfortunately we must err on the side of caution to protect the Novaks and their interests.”
Sam is not suspicious when Dean finally showed up at the flat and only asked questions about how was his day at work after lunch.
Unsurprisingly, Luke did not show up to work for the rest of the week. The official explanation in the office was that he was sick with some virus. With his first paycheck, Dean bought himself a new wardrobe so that he has more appropriate clothes to wear to work. The dress code at Invisi-tech was business casual so he did not necessarily need to wear a suit and a tie.
Dean can tell that Luke had actually obliged by the only request that he had given Michael when Sam comes home one night visibly bothered by something. At first, he remains tight lipped on the matter until he finally breaks down later after a few cans of beers in his stomach.
“Turns out that Luke is an omega. He has been pretending to be an alpha for most of his life so he could assume the position of vice president. But something went wrong with his meds so he went into heat.” Sam hides his head behind his hands. Dean does not bother telling his brother that he already knows.
“Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me which he is, it still doesn’t change my feelings for him, but I wish he trusted me enough to tell me this sooner.” His brother sighed.
“At least it’s all out in the open now and Luke is not Ruby.” He offered his brother in comfort.
Apparently Dean had learned enough from Alfie as the next time he went into work, he was granted his own desk space. But what really surprised him was the bouquet of flowers sitting on top of it. He looked to see if there was a note identifying the culprit but there was none.
“Well, well, looks like someone has an admirer.” Meg snickered as she walked by with a grin on her face.
“Did you do this?” Dean asked, wondering if the flowers were some kind of joke.
“Oh please, I’m taken and I wouldn’t want to make Cassie jealous. He may have a sweet face but you don’t want to mess with him.” Meg waved her hand dismissively. He stared back down at the flowers.
None of his other coworkers had any idea where the flowers on his desk came from when he asked. He was literally just assigned that desk so not too many people had to know it was his. Luke had recovered well enough from his heat that he was back in the office acting as if nothing had happened to him. He had to give the other omega some credit, he sure knew how to act.
Luke did routine sweeps through the office, walking by each desk and making sure that everyone was on task. While he was away, Dean had seen Michael occasionally stop by but apparently most of Luke’s tasks had been delegated for Meg to handle.
“Hey, newbie!” He hears Gabriel greets him cheerfully. Dean remembered that Meg told him that he ran a candy shop but with how much he saw him around he was skeptical of how hands on he actually was. Probably dumped most of the work on one of his poor workers.
“The name is Dean.” He corrected him stiffly.
“Darn, now I don’t have an excuse to call you Mister Handsome.” Gabriel winked and Dean groaned at the flirtation. Was he the one responsible for the flowers? He was a Novak so he certainly had the connections to know about his desk. But they barely knew each other.
“And what a shame that I don’t have an excuse to call you midget.” He shot back. Despite the insult, Gabriel’s grin did not waver. In fact, he looked damn pleased that Dean had the guts to stand up to him.
“Gabriel, at it again, I see.” Luke spoke up, tapping his foot against the floor.
“Your employee talked back to me!” Gabriel exclaimed dramatically, acting like it was a big deal. Perhaps not many people did since he was related to the president and vice president of Invisi-tech.
“I will be sure to remember to give Mr. Winchester a raise when the time comes around for the annual employee evaluations.” Luke said with a completely straight face. Honestly, based off their interactions, it sounded like Luke was entirely used to his younger brother’s behavior.
“Remind me why you are my favorite brother again?” Gabriel fake pouted at him.
Soon enough Luke was dragging Gabriel away and Dean was left in peace.
“I apologize for Gabriel’s behavior. Unfortunately, he has developed an interest in you.” Michael seeks him out later in the day. Apparently, Luke had notified him about the antics of their younger brother. Dean can see his eyes glance over at the flowers but he does not make any comments.
“Yeah, I can see that his height is not the only thing that is stunted.” Michael merely raised an eyebrow in amusement at his statement.
“Honestly, I dealt with worse so while I don’t welcome the interest, it’s not a big deal.” Dean shrugged.
“Would you allow me to make up for my brother’s behavior by taking you to lunch?” Honestly, Dean could not understand why the president was going out of his way to be polite to him. He had no intention of breaking his word to keep Luke’s secret. Sam knew the truth and that was all that mattered to him.
When he agreed to the offer, Dean expected to be treated to a free lunch at the cafeteria and not ushered into the back of Michael’s limo to go to a fancy restaurant that was totally out of his price range.
“Do you take all your employees out for nice meals?” Dean laughs awkwardly as he sits down onto the chair offered by the waiter.
“Not typically, no.” Michael shakes his head as he takes the seat opposite him. When he is handed the menu, Dean’s eyes nearly rolls out of its sockets. Dear Lord, this was not a luxury he was accustomed to. They sold steaks for fifty dollars!
“I will have the salmon avocado salad.” The alpha informed the waiter promptly, as if he had ordered from here a thousand times before and had no actual need to read through the menu.
“I will just take the good old burger and fries.” Dean was relieved to find an item so ordinary on the menu.
“So, does all of your family work for you?”
“No, my half sister Rafaela works as an ER doctor...my father was not known for being a faithful man.” Michael added in explanation as Dean’s eyes widened at the fact that he had a half sister.
“Sorry, I just was not expecting that with…” Dean started rambling but cut himself off before he finished, not wanting to offend the other man.
“Having wealth hardly makes us perfect.” Michael stared down at his glass of wine. “What is your family like, outside of Sam?”
“My mom passed away when I was young and my dad died a few years after that. It’s pretty much just me and Sam and Uncle Bobby.” The Winchester house had caught on fire and unfortunately their mother was the only one to not make it out alive. Once the firefighters had finished their investigation, it turned to be a case of arson by a punk that called himself “Yellow Eyes”, who had a penchant for starting random fires.
Their father obsessed over Yellow Eyes and getting revenge for their mother’s death. The obsession was so bad that it drove him towards alcohol until he finally died from alcohol poisoning in the liver. Since Sam and Dean had both been minors, their dad’s friend had taken them under his roof and became like a father to them.
“I’m sorry for your loss.” Michael’s eyes were downcast as he offered his condolences.
From there, the conversation took on a more light hearted tone as Michael recounted stories of his youth and the shenanigans of his siblings. Gabriel and Luke in particular were quite the troublemakers. Dean was not surprised by Gabriel but he was in regards to Luke. The omega seemed so serious all the time at the office that he could hardly imagine him getting into trouble as a teenager.
“Those two were always attached at the hip. Gabriel idolized Luke and did his best to imitate him.”
“How did they end up so close?” Dean asked.
“Our father did not have much a presence in our lives, we barely saw him outside of corporate functions and galas. As for our mother, well, she fancied spending her time with her numerous lovers than her family. So, often times I, as the eldest son, was left running the household and the care for our younger siblings fell to Luke as the second oldest. Gabriel is technically the fourth child but Rafaela was raised exclusively by her mother. There is a several year gap between Gabriel and the youngest so there were many years where Luke was only looking after Gabriel.”
“That must have been difficult, it sounds like you didn’t even have a childhood because you had to grow up so fast.” Dean had thought his childhood was rough but at least they had Bobby to take care of them so they had time to just be kids.
“Perhaps but I like to believe that the experience has helped to shape me into the man that I am today because I strive for my best to be nothing like my father.” And it became abundantly clear to Dean that Michael was an alpha who put his family first, which only reinforced what he had witnessed of his behavior earlier when he had found out about Luke’s omega status.
Once the superb lunch was over, Michael’s limo drove them back to the office. Dean noticed Meg looking at him with a knowing smirk as he walked towards his desk.
As Dean recounted his day to his brother at the flat, he watched as Sam’s eyes went as wide as saucers.
“What?” He asked in confusion.
“If I didn’t know any better, it sounds like Michael is trying to court you.” Courting was a much more formal and traditional version of dating between alpha and omegas. The alpha would present a gift at the start to indicate their interest and it was up to the omega to accept or refuse their gift. An acceptance would start the courting process, which went on for however long the couple wished until they felt they were ready to cement their bond and become mates or part ways.
“No way.” Michael certainly had not vocalized any such interest in him. If he had, he was being way too subtle.
“You said so yourself that you don’t know who left those flowers.” Sam reminded him.
“Absolutely not. Why would he have any interest in me?” Dean denied. Though he knew that there was a slim possibility that Michael could have left the flowers and that their lunch was more than just a lunch. But if the flowers had been intended as a courting gift surely Michael would have left a note.
“Dean, don’t think so little of yourself.”
“But c’mon, Michael? The president of Invisi-tech? Also, don’t forget that you’re dating his brother.” Dean pointed out. Sam had not said anything about breaking up so he assumed he was still with Luke.
“My relationship with Luke is irrelevant. Perhaps you made quite an impression when he interviewed you.” Sam offered but Dean remained firmly skeptical.
Dean enjoyed the occasional slice of pie but he would not classify himself as a man of sweets, contrary to the outdated stereotype that the fastest way to an omega’s heart was to appeal to their sweet tooth. But nevertheless, he stopped by the ground floor of the Invisi-tech building to drop by Gabriel’s candy shop, which he had only seen in passing and had yet to actually enter it.
“Couldn’t resist the charm?” Gabriel greeted immediately with a wink.
“Hardly, I just wanted some answers.” Dean rolled his eyes.
“Yeah? I might have some answers but it’s going to cost ya.” He leaned forward against the glass counter where the register sat, grinning.
“Yeah? How would you like your head through glass?”
“Damn, Michael sures likes them feisty.” Gabriel let out a low whistle.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Dean had came to the candy store to talk to Gabriel because he wanted clarification on Michael’s comment that he had taken an interest in him.
“You sorry son of a bitch---I have never seen my brother romantically interested in anybody before and all the sudden he’s acting like a teenage girl with a crush. You could say that I was curious about the omega that captured my bro’s heart.” As soon as the words come out of Gabriel’s mouth, Dean takes out running towards Michael’s office. He wanted to hear confirmation from the man himself to make sure that his younger brother was not just dicking around with him.
Dean barrels past Castiel, cutting him off before he is able to make any comment in regards to him heading towards the president’s office without a scheduled appointment. Right now he did not even care if Michael was in the middle of an important business meeting. Thankfully, Michael is completely alone in his office as he bursts through the doors and merely blinks at his abrupt arrival.
“Why didn’t you say anything to me directly about having feelings for me.” Dean instantly demanded, confronting Michael about what he had learned from the younger Novak.
“I know you have had bad experiences with alphas in the past so I did not want to be too forward with you.” Michael admitted with a sigh, rising out of his chair and walked around the desk.
“What could you possibly see in me?” He was in denial that such a powerful and wealthy alpha would be interested in the likes of him. Sam might have said that he is too hard of himself but Dean likes to think that he is being realistic.
Michael steps forward, closing the gap between them. “Do you know how many people have tried to sink their claws into me? But for them it was never for me as a person but for my wealth. You showed true character when you refused my offer of money.”
“I just did what I thought was the right thing.” Dean shrugs.
“And that is one of the most beautiful things about you.” Michael hunches forward, leaving a chaste kiss on Dean’s lips. Dean automatically closes his eyes at the sensation and lets himself relish the warm sensation that was pooling inside his stomach.
He faintly heard the door creak open and someone coughing, which caused him to freeze. His fingers dug into Michael’s firm back.
“Well then, in that case, I shall return later when you are no longer preoccupied. And perhaps next time you should consider locking your doors before you decide to ravish one of our employees.” Dean heard Luke’s smooth voice permeate the office. He blushed and buried his head into Michael’s shirt.
“I will keep that in mind. Though, you are hardly one to talk, I must say that this is not nearly as compromising as the position that I once caught you with Sam.” Michael shot back.
“Oh my God, I don’t want to hear about what my brother gets up to!” Dean yelled.
“Well, I will leave you to it.” Luke gives a wink before turning around and exiting the office, closing the door behind him.
“This is so awkward, I am never going to be able to look you brother straight in the face ever again.” Dean whined.
“I am sure Luke will be recounting the details to Sam later with much delight.”
“You are not helping!” The omega lifted his head off Michael’s chest and lightly punched him in the shoulder. The alpha does not complain and smoothes his worries over by pulling him into another kiss. Oh Lord, he could just get lost in those fine lips.
The next day, Michael gave a more official courting gift, a whole apple pie - he must have found out about his love of pie from Sam or having Luke ask Sam, this time he was more direct about his intentions. Dean did not hesitant in saying yes.
Despite the relentless teasing from Luke and Gabriel, who if he didn’t know better acted like they were twins, Michael was incredibly sweet to him and for the first time he actually felt happy in a relationship. A relationship that was so much more than just about his biology.
Perhaps not all alphas were giant knotheads.
