Every city had their own Batman or Superman. Well, Lawrence used to have two, The Flame and The Ice Emperor, named respectively for their pyrokinetic and cryokinetic abilities. They were a pair of crime fighting superheroes and more importantly, brothers.
Until one day The Flame was pronounced dead and no one had seen or heard from The Ice Emperor since then. There was only wild speculation and rumors. The leading theory was that The Ice Emperor had hung up his cape and became a recluse, turning his back on the world.
Little did they know the startling truth…
In the wake of The Flame’s death and The Ice Emperor’s disappearance, there had been a spike in the amount of crime that plagued Lawrence, which led to the police department being overworked, trying to compensate for the superheroes’ loss. What had once been a flexible schedule, Sam Winchester was now working long hours out on patrol. Sometimes it was just a battle to drag himself out of bed in the morning to go to work knowing the long day that awaited him as a beat cop.
A new supervillain, known as Niverus, took advantage of the lack of superheroes and rolled into Lawrence to cause complete chaos. Not one detective had figured out yet what his endgame was but what they did know that he was mostly targeting Richard Roman Enterprises and the Mayor’s office.
Sam’s partner, Ash, was out on vacation, leaving him to patrol the streets on his own. Most of the calls he could handle just fine as they typically did not amount to anything major but then he was called out to an incident of suspicious activity in an alley from town hall. He did not think it would amount to much but he was wrong.
So very wrong.
The suspicious activity was not some teenager fooling around or a graffiti artist painting the walls but Niverus himself. As soon as he noticed the super villain talking with a woman in hushed tones, he hid behind a dumpster.
“...well, I’m afraid that we have some unexpected company.” Niverus spoke louder and glanced over to where Sam was hiding. The woman walked over to his hiding spot and pulled him out into the open then dragged him towards Niverus. He certainly lived up to the stories of being intimidating.
“A cop, huh? Trying to gain some glory for yourself by stopping the big bad villain?” He mocked as his icy blue eyes, peeking out through the mask, raked over him.
“You’re wrong, I could care less about glory. You’re a threat to this city.” Sam responded as he thrashed about in the woman’s hold.
“I wouldn’t be such a good villain if I wasn’t a threat.” Niverus chuckled before settling into a serious expression, “Tell me, how can you stand to protect such a corrupt city?”
“Lawrence is far from perfect but you shouldn’t condemn the whole city…”
“A city that snatches children from their homes and experiments on them for their own gain?” Niverus interrupted, speaking with such a cold fury that it almost sounded personal.
“What are you-”
“I would recommend that you do some research and look up Project Factor X then tell me if you would still fight for this city.” At Niverus’ nod, the woman let him go and the two of them walked off. Sam’s mind was left reeling as in the aftermath of his encounter with the notorious super villain, he was left completely unharmed.
Sam did not tell anyone about his encounter with Niverus, frankly he did not think that anyone would believe him if he did. But he was left with burning questions about what this Project Factor X could be. As soon as he got to his desk, mainly for filling out paperwork, at the department, he logged into his computer and did a search. He got an access denied screen telling him that he did not have a high enough clearance to view it, which made him even more suspicious as how did Niverus know about it then.
But Sam was not going to let the lack of clearance stop him, especially when he was friends with an exceptionally talented hacker.
“These took a lot of work to get to, you should have seen the number of firewalls guarding this data but it was no match for me,” Charlie winked as she waved a file in front of his face with a brief grin before settling into a more serious expression, “Sorry, I couldn’t resist the temptation and read through the information. This is some fucked up stuff.”
She handed the file over to Sam with a frown before continuing, “Did you know that The Flame and The Ice Emperor were science experiments? According to this report, their superhero powers were artificially created inside a lab.”
Sam furrowed his eyebrows at the information then started reading through the file to see for himself what Charlie was talking about. Immediately, he noticed the bit of text that indicated that Richard Roman Enterprises had conducted the experiments and furthermore, it had been sponsored by the mayor, Chuck Shurley. It immediately set off a flag in his head as those were the same two groups that Niverus had been targeting. That could not be a mere coincidence.
“How did you even find out about this?” Charlie asked, causing Sam to briefly look up from the papers.
“I got a tip, though I wasn’t quite sure what I would find.” He answered half truthfully.
“Anyways, you should take care, I don’t want you getting hurt.” Charlie warned him before taking her leave. Sam was able to continue reading without any further interruption. The Flame and The Ice Emperor had been the first two test subjects in Project Factor X but not the last. He felt bad, he used to be a big fanboy of The Ice Emperor when he was younger and had posters hanging on his wall. Dean used to make fun of him for having a crush on a superhero.
The protectors of Lawrence probably had not become so by choice but had been forced into the life.
Sam was exhausted when he returned to his apartment, his mind throbbing from all that information that he had learned. The file had given a lot of insight but what was Niverus’ connection? He unholstered his gun and placed it on the end table by the front door alongside his eyes. He started unbuttoning his uniform shirt but paused when he walked into the living room and noticed someone sitting on his couch.
“Niverus,” Sam hissed.
“Nice posters, they really add to the decor of your charming little place,” The supervillain chuckled, making it apparent that not only had he broke into his apartment but also severely invaded his privacy by scoping out his master bedroom. So, okay, he had not gotten ride of his superhero posters when he became an adult but it was his apartment. Sam felt his face becoming hot. The other man did not cease with his teasing, “Oh, have you masturbated to the images?”
“That’s none of your business! And I doubt that’s why you are here.” Sam stammered out, flustered by the implication which may have been true.
“Indeed, I imagine that you have looked into what I’ve asked?” The smirk faded from his face as he crossed his legs casually.
“I have but what does Project Factor X mean to you?”
“I had an older brother once, one that I loved and idolized until he was cruelly taken from me.”
“And revenge is your answer? Terrorizing all of Lawrence? Involving innocents that had no part in it?” Sam pointed out.
“I don’t expect you to understand.”
“Then why tell me? Why spare my life?” Sam demanded angrily, balling his hands into fists.
“To sow the seed of doubt in your mind,” Niverus rose up from the couch and stood in front of him. His gaze flickered downwards, glancing at the expanse of his chest that had been exposed from when he had unbuttoned his shirt partially. Growing self conscious under his attention, Sam pulled on the fabric of his shirt, closing the gap.
“Look, I get why you’re upset but I’m not going to turn my back on the people.” Sam grabbed Niverus by the collar of his flamboyant costume, conveying that he was firm in his stance. He would not be swayed. The other man leaned forward in his hold and kissed him on the lips, catching him off guard. Niverus took advantage of his surprise to slip in his tongue. This was so wrong but Sam could not find the strength to pull away.
Before he new it, Sam had been pulled into his bedroom and stripped down to his boxers. He was panting as Niverus was licking at his right nipple while his hand rubbed him through the fabric of his boxers.
“Tell me you don’t want this and I’ll stop right here and leave,” Niverus whispered into his ear. Sam shuddered as the cold air brushed against his wet nipple.
“Please,” Sam begged.
In the morning when Sam woke up, he felt an unfamiliar sore in his ass, a lingering reminder of last night’s activities. As he sat up and ran his hands over the mattress, he noticed that he was alone. If it were not for the slightly painful memento, Sam would have thought that it was all one bizarre dream.. He had thought that perhaps Niverus had already taken off but he was proven wrong when he found him preparing breakfast in his kitchen. He did a double take.
“I would have thought that you had dastardly plots to get up to?” Sam teased, certainly not expecting the supervillain to be acting so domestic inside his apartment.
“I hardly do everything on my own, contrary to popular belief. You already had the pleasure of meeting my right hand woman, Meg.” He spoke lightly as he prodded the contents of the pan with a spatula.
He had not seen much of Niverus since they slept together, no unexpected drop ins at his apartment or by chance alley meetings. It was probably for the best, Sam brushed it off. It was just a one night stand.
The mayor was giving a speech at city hall and most of the officers were posted at the scene as his protection detail in addition to his own guard. Sam was among them. He could not look at the man the same way since he now knew that he had authorized Project Factor X, all those poor kids that had been roped into the experiments against their will, but Sam still had a duty to perform, whether he liked it or not. Everyone was on edge, expecting Niverus to crash the event.
Sam was standing against the wall ten feet away from the podium keeping a close eye on the mayor, occasionally scanning through the audience of reporters and citizens for anyone that appeared suspicious.
“As the great FDR once said, there’s nothing to fear but feat itself. The great city of Lawrence shall not bend to the will of a madman…” The mayor spoke dramatically and as if on cue, explosives went off inside the building causing complete chaos. Many of his fellow officers swarmed around the mayor to act as a shield while others helped to evacuate the citizens. Through the smoke, Niverus appeared, Meg trailing behind him faithfully. He clapped his hands mockingly.
“What an inspiring speech, really gave me the chills.”
“Niverus! You won’t get away with this!” Zachariah, Sam’s arrogant boss, yelled.
“Oh? And what, you’ll stop me?” He laughed, which only egged Zachariah on to charge at him. Niverus snapped his fingers and the police lieutenant was frozen into a statue of ice. He then kicked the statue, shattering it into pieces. There were loud gasps of shock amongst those that still remained in the room and many others started running, leaving the mayor pretty much defenseless.
“Luke, it doesn’t have to be this way. What happened to Michael was extremely unfortunate and regrettable…” Chuck pleaded.
“Don’t speak his name, you have no right!” Niverus hissed out. The names that the mayor mentioned sounded familiar but he could not place why.
“Please be reasonably, son.” The mayor raised his hands up in a pacifying manner.
“I have no father! That man died when he handed me and my brother over to be lab rats!” He screamed in pure fury. It was then that it finally clicked in Sam’s mind why the names Luke and Michael were familiar. He had read it in the file about Project Factor X. Those were the true names for The Flame and The Ice Emperor. It had finally made sense why Niverus carried such a deep personal grudge.
He had once been the superhero known as The Ice Emperor, whose posters hung on Sam’s bedroom wall. He had slept with his childhood hero, Sam blushed at the realization.
From behind, a police officer came up and drew his gun, pointing it at Niverus’ back. Sam reached out his hand, shouting, “Watch out!”
The gun jerked in the cop’s hold and fired into Niverus’ leg instead of his back. Sam rushed to his side and supported him while Meg went after the shooter, kicking his ass.
“I didn’t know that you cared,” Niverus, or should he call him The Ice Emperor now, gave him a small smile despite the pained look in his eyes.
“We should get you out of here, I’m assuming that you have an exit plan already prepared?”
“Are you sure that’s wise? You’ll be labeled as an enemy of Lawrence for helping me.” Niverus cautioned him.
“I don’t care.”
“So be it,” Niverus reached into his pocket then tossed a smoke screen bomb onto the floor, allowing them cover to escape the city hall building. Sam followed Meg’s lead and she took them to an incognito truck parked out in the back. She jumped into the driver’s seat while Sam laid Niverus in the back and squeezed in beside him. Sam ripped off the sleeve of his uniform and wrapped it tightly around the other man’s leg.
“Thank you,” Niverus reached up and stroked Sam’s cheek fondly.
“Umm, what should I call you?”
“Luke’s fine.” He lifted his body up to give him a chaste peck on the lips.
“This is kinda awkward...you saw my posters…”
“Yes, it was kinda distracting to see images of myself staring back as I ravished you,” Luke grinned at him.
“Jesus, if you two start fucking back there, I’m pulling over and ditching you,” Meg interjected.
“If you insist,” Luke chuckled, leaning back into the car seat. They eventually arrived at a bunker off a beaten road. Meg helped Sam guide Luke inside their hideout and down the hallways until they reached what Sam presumed was Luke’s bedroom.
“I’m gonna go ahead and call Raphael to come check out your injury.” Meg informed them before leaving them alone.
“Stay with me?” Luke asked, starting up from the bed that he was laid out on.
“Of course,” Sam answered.
